Our short-term goal is to reduce morbidity and mortality of the indigenous population of Guatemala, and in the future, of the entire community at maternal and perinatal health high risk.
To date, there has been monitoring of pregnant women in 8 municipalities of Alta Verapaz, which represents about 175,000 inhabitants. In 2015 it is intended to upgrade to all the municipalities of Guatemala with the public and official support of the MSPAS, and also expanding the number of remote advisers (from current 60 to 460).
By joining efforts from EHAS Foundation, from the NGO TuLaSalud, and from Area Health of MSPAS, it is expected that in 5 years the number of remote advisers will be significantly increased (60 to 460) and the health coverage of designated areas (from 1000 to 4000 ultrasound scanners).
Our project does not require large capital investments and e-learning we can be easily expanded in nurses and telefacilitators.
Reporting the existence of specialized nurse units and remote local advisers in the indigenous community of the Guatemalan jungl
Reporting benefits of monitoring pregnancy and facilities:physical proximity to their area to manage the pregnancy in 15minutes
Training specialized nurse units in the use of portable USB ultrasound scanners and in the properly acquisition of dry blood
(1) increasing the number of pregnant women monitored at 4000; and (2) decreasing the morbidity and mortality in this area.
Promoting the need to control pregnancy and the benefits of be monitoring among pregnant indigenous
Encouraging the use of portable USB ultrasound and dry blood testing with filter paper in the Guatemalan health district.
Expanding the number of portable notebooks, ultrasounds and dry blood tests by public or private grants.
- This project would complement the work that the MSPAS of Guatemala is currently offering.
- The NGO TuLaSalud recently signed several cooperation agreements and financing with the MSPAS.
- EHAS Foundation and the NGO TuLaSalud have previously worked in two initiatives, one related to the design of a manual of ICT and Health in Spanish cooperation and the other related to a potable water supply in rural Guatemala.- EHAS Foundation has widely experience in telemedicine, supported by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and Ashoka Foundation has recognized her Director ANDRES MARTINEZ
EHAS Foundation has implemented projects in Peru, Colombia and Ecuador. Currently, contacts have been initiated in some countries in Sub-Saharian Africa.
With little change in the current health strategy, this project would expand health care staff and provide them with this powerful technology for better maternal and child control. All systems are low-cost and, in addition, the Department of Health area of MSPAS in Alta Verapaz, as it has done in previous NGO TuLaSalud projects, assume the charges of management, maintenance and repairing of these technologies.
