About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Women Unemployment is a big issue in Turkey, some regions have fewer than 1 in 4 women aged 20–64 employed in 2012, and in the south-east less than 10.0 % are employed. This causes dependence on male family members, and in combination with deep routed traditions can prevent women to make their own choices. This is a cycle to be addressed at the root to avoid effecting future generations. Women have the right to work and freedom of choice.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

10 participants and a leader travel to Italy for 7 days to learn from others with strong traditions where male dependence & women high unemployment is an issue and how such women succeeded, this gives alternative prospective and empowers Turkish women. The delegation will create a 1&5 year life plan identifying what opportunities they have, how they can make their ideas work, how to overcome traditional taboos & how to finance it. Their empowerment is supported by an International women’s help group for momentum, visibility & local respect. Mentors will follow them for a 1yr via a social group &meetings. The participant has a buddy within the group and a sponsor who they can call upon, if the morale is kept high objectives are achieved.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

A lady in Turkey has an innovative idea, but society & tradition create difficulties, so how to move forward in a male dominated society with no financial independence? A group of women in a similar situation get together, they go to Italy-Abruzzo where they meet a local and an international mentor, they are now part of a group, which supports each other, they get taught how to create a life plan(strengths, weaknesses, opportunities & threats), to be motivated & skills of overcoming hurdles; all done by Italian ladies who had to overcome traditional issues, sexism&male dominated environments, but despite this made a success. After the training a women’s support-group in Turkey ensures objectives are met &the project will be sustained &promoted.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

We worked with 120 young people (95 found careers & 15 own business)& they communicate via social & business networks, 50% are now helping others. We create a community and business links with people who understand daily difficulties. One lady has a web site selling dresses sourced from a lady she met at a training course, she is getting both business skills & life skills to conquer her private issues & got a financial aid at the beginning. Another lady from Polish minority living in Germany found courage as an architect to set up an office, for which the social support was imperative to keep motivated. Being part of a social group was fundamental for motivation, insures momentum for women’s projects and it has empowered Italian women where traditions go against modern life, Italian women have been working on solutions for the last 30 years, which ensures the project’s success in Turkey.
Sustainability

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

We will create a community where the members will support each other in all aspects. We are involved in Erasmus EU projects and ESF EU projects to secure funding and develop a bigger network. We create links between qualified people, University and Industry across different countries. Industry is willing to sponsor individual initiative. We will offer yearly refreshment courses to keep members motivated and give them fresh skills to move forward.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

Women often lack economic assets so our solutions push financial and social independence, via ESF funds, national authorities & private investors. To achieve this & succeed they need a clear plan, considering their personal circumstances & a support group to endure the hardship. Other organizations have set ideas, they do not consider personal positions and only partially empower. The Erasmus EU funds, supports graduates in education but not their long term ambitions & ideas of the individual. Our project makes you part of a community and the more successful ones will sponsor the weaker ones
Team

Founding Story

The founder a woman from an Italian minority group in Germany, working with minority groups also of Turkish origin, gave a great insight to the mentality &the restrictions a culture can inflict. Women when given the chance find an inner strength to succeed. Working with the EU projects gave another perspective on how to empower women, we are working within Italy, Poland and minority groups in Germany and England. The Turkish expansion is natural as we worked with the Turkish minority group in Germany, when meeting Prof Dr. Alayunt at EGE University (Turkey) at the “We mean business” conference, we felt we could address the issue of Turkish ladies who are highly qualified but often put aside by circumstances, society & strong cultural ideas.

Barriers: What barriers might hinder the success of your project and how do you plan to overcome them?

A barrier is the culture and the tradition which are male dominated. We plan to overcome this by finding the ladies a male sponsor (relation, friend) who are the link to the local people. When asked what is your daughter, sister doing, they will answer with pride & spread the word of how fantastic this idea is. This makes sure the population will give it the right respect, a different prospective & generate opportunities. Another barrier is keeping their motivation high as they will face a lot of adversity. We overcome this with the support of mentors & a buddy which is doing a similar path.

Full Impact Potential: What are the main spread strategies moving forward? (Please consider geographic spread, policy reform, and independent replication/adoption of the idea or other mechanisms.)

This idea of empowering women is designed to expand on a worldwide scale starting with our existing network including Italy, England and Poland, and now into Turkey and beyond through word of mouth and re-training of women who have conquered similar barriers and making a success of their life. It’s a snowball effect. We use social media like Fb and twitter to spread the word to up-date and keep people connected. Success stories are publicized in local press and on our dedicated website. Our partner the most prestigious Turkish University gives this project visibility. The EU has programs like ESF and Erasmus+ to tackle some of these issues, we are already involved in. The project outcome will be publicized through these channels too.

Partnerships: Tell us about your partnerships.

CPA has a network connecting businesses, people & councils to create communities, share ideas and create business links. We received the EU “We mean business“ award for good practice on projects - skills of young people had to be matched to business to ensure successful outcomes for both parties. We teamed up with the prestigious Ege University in Turkey & have agreed a LOI defining tasks & responsibilities. We both are involved in EU projects .

Empowerment of women can solve a lot more issues than just poverty and unemployment, like women’s health, dependence and integration to ensure a better life for future generations.
History shows us that we need courage to succeed with the combination of passion and what industry wants or needs, but sometimes we need a bit of guidance to get it all right. Passion first, money will follow, but what other factors must we consider when living in an environment where some traditional aspects are in conflict with modern life and industry? And how can those be overcome or even be altered to benefit everybody?
