Project Summary
Elevator Pitch

Concise Summary: Help us pitch this solution! Provide an explanation within 3-4 short sentences.

Emirati women account for less than 5% of the private-sector workforce, partly due to a lack of flexible work options. Nabbesh’s ambitious www initiative centers on partnering with private-sector companies to create 3000 flexible employment opportunities tailored for Emirati women in 2014.

WHAT IF - Inspiration: Write one sentence that describes a way that your project dares to ask, "WHAT IF?"

What if economic empowerment of women through flexible work opportunities could transform the Middle East?
About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Unemployment for women in the MENA region is nearly 40% in many countries. Emirati women account for only 5% of the private-sector labour force in the United Arab Emirates. Polling by the Dubai Women's Establishment suggests that nearly 70% of women stated that the lack of flexible work opportunities was the main reason preventing them from joining the labour force although Emirati women account for 70% of university graduates (MOHESR).

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

Nabbesh is MENA's virtual skills market, where people can post and find project-based and flexible work opportunities online for free, with secure online payment options. The www Initiative aims to use Nabbesh's online platform to employ Emirati women in the private-sector through flexible, project-based or virtual-driven ways. By giving women flexibility in the private-sector, Emirati women can contribute more to the UAE’s growing economy in a way that is consistent with the UAE’s culture and family values. Nabbesh believes if this concept can work in the UAE, the UAE can help bring this model of flexible-work for women to the greater MENA region, which has the potential to empower women both economically and socially.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

Emirati women achieved 1st place globally in educational attainment according the World Economic Forum, yet 60% do not to work as they are unable to balance the long private-sector hours with their traditional family roles. The Nabbesh way of work enables women to gain exposure to a regional marketplace, offers opportunities to work on projects or tasks that match their lifestyle, on-site or virtually, earn an income and build an online reputation based on merit and not gender. Through Nabbesh, Emirati women no longer have to choose between family and careers. They have an opportunity to lead Arab women towards a new paradigm of work using 21st Century technology to finally choose work that works for them and contribute to their societies.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

To date, Nabbesh has 30,000 members and has successfully fulfilled over 3,000 jobs through our platform. Micro Impact: Creating high quality, private-sector, employment opportunities for Emirati women will lead to diversity in the workforce, inclusion of Emirati women, knowledge transfer and economic empowerment of these women. Macro Impact: Nabbesh's strategic objective is to radically alter MENA's unemployment statistics by connecting freelancers with project-based opportunities in the region. The www Initiative will not only increase the number of Emirati women in the private-sector, it will also bring about important social change to the region. As an important regional leader both socially and economically, the UAE will be able to positively shape the region towards more economic and social equality for women, while diminishing the region's growing unemployment crisis.
Sustainability

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

The www Initiative requires a limited budget for the promotion, development, and coordination of this initiative. Nabbesh has a broad network of Emirati business leaders and corporate partners that have already voiced support for this program. Nabbesh plans to use the Nabbesh platform and business model to generate revenue and sustain this plan. Nabbesh currently charges a percentage for each job awarded via its network and its platform.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

There is currently no large-scale effort in the UAE to promote flexible work opportunities for women. Overall there are only a limited number of flexible (i.e., part-time) job opportunities within private-sector companies, but anecdotal evidence suggests these flexible work opportunities are very popular among Emirati women. Saudi Arabia's Glowork currently has an online portal that successfully helps women work remotely, but they are not currently in the UAE marketplace and their business does not specialize in project-based, flexible work opportunities.

Founding Story

Launched in June 2012 by two Arab women who have experienced first-hand the challenges of growing up and finding opportunities in the Arab world, Nabbesh.com was born to be part of the solution to unemployment by creating a marketplace where talent can gain exposure, choose from an array of jobs posted daily, complete jobs and get paid securely online. Nabbesh.com is now home to 30,000 skilled men, women and youth who are looking for flexible or remote work options including nearly 6000 SMEs looking to contract that talent, effectively changing the employment landscape. The www Initiative is merely an extension of our founding story and another step towards the economic empowerment of women in the UAE and the greater MENA region.

Barriers: What barriers might hinder the success of your project and how do you plan to overcome them?

The founders of Nabbesh are women who have grown up in the war torn Middle East, encountering challenges on a daily basis. At Nabbesh we are not afraid of barriers to success and we do not wait for the perfect set of circumstances in order to make an impact. Rather, we are thinking beyond the region's limitations and barriers by creating a new work paradigm that we believe has the potential to resonate well beyond the MENA region.

Full Impact Potential: What are the main spread strategies moving forward? (Please consider geographic spread, policy reform, and independent replication/adoption of the idea or other mechanisms.)

Our main strategies for a successful and replicable business model center on getting it 'right' in the Emirati women's market. The UAE is a traditional leader in women's rights and educational equity, and the UAE's government policies are ripe for this initiative.
