Football is a growing social phenomenon which makes an important contribution to the world strategic objectives of solidarity and prosperity It generates significant values such as team spirit, solidarity, tolerance and fair play thus contributing to personal development and society . This action will play an essential role to bring post- conflict communities of Sierra Leone closer and tackle issues that matters directly to them.

About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Although the government of Sierra Leone, UN and International community at large are working tirelessly to foster reconciliation and peace in post-conflict communities yet remain division especially among youths on political belonging, ethnicity, region and participation in the war. Even now victims and perpetrators (mainly youths) during war are yet to see one another as one family of their respective communities of which more need to be done in promoting social cohesion and reconciliation. Against this view, the Humanist Watch Salone has developed this action plan to forge social cohesion, reconciliation and peace as wheel to promote development.

This action is unique as it seeks to compliment the peace-building effort of both the Government of Sierra Leone and International Community. Promoting football in a fragile post-conflict country like Sierra Leone with fresh evident of political intolerance and increased youths involvement in political violence will sustain social cohesion and human development. Organizing football competition at chiefdom and District levels will create a common space; bring people of different ethnic origins and from all walks of life together to interact, make friend help one another and by doing so strengthen community spirit and resilience. .

The Humanist Watch Salone works to strive towards the achievement of durable peace and sustainable development through partnership to improve socio- economic status of the marginalized such as; women, Children, youths and physically disadvantaged in the society. Since its inception, the organization has worked successfully with youths in the area of peace- building and non-violence campaign in politics as well as prevention activities of violence against women and girls through the establishment of youth groups including football clubs in project operational location. The established community structures has been actively taking challenge to change their colleague youths violence attitude through recreational activities like football which has immensely contributed in creating awareness among youths and community at large on the knowledge and skills of community led driven approach in peace consolidation. Also the Humanist Watch Salone is in partnership with UNIPSIL responsible for the consolidation of peace and advancement of development in Sierra Leone and Civil Society Network in an effort to enhance durable peace and sustainable growth and development.

Year1: upon access to funds, establish linkages with partners develop strategic project implementation plan, community attitude and practices survey, and intensive community mobilization for action and commence football competition and trainings
Year2: Continued community mobilization for action, football competition, trainings. Commence mentoring of district football regulatory bodies and beneficial groups to sustain project activities.
Year 3: continued community mobilization, football competition, trainings and foster commitment of football regulatory bodies and beneficial groups.

This idea strategies implementation will regard intimate collaboration with government line ministries like; Ministry of Education, Youths and Sport and Ministry of Social Welfare, Gender and Children’s Affairs as to maintain government involvement in the execution . Civil Society Network promoting peace-building and development, Local Councils and District Football Association of Kenema and Kailahun Districts maximizes promotion of football, peace and development within the Eastern Province of Sierra Leone been one of the objective of this action plan. We are with a fervent conviction that success cannot be achieve without support from business quarters in sporting materials

The Story
What was the defining moment that led you to this innovation?

Sierra Leone is crawling to emerge from the eleven years civil war characterized by a total breakdown of social bond and community structures. With the official end of the war, the UN and International community at large are tirelessly contributing to build and consolidate peace in the country. This effort has resulted to two democratic elections among are the 2007 elections that was seen by the world as the most credible democratic elections in post conflict nation which brought a change in Government. After 2007 elections, a decade political division continued to surface with evident of violence among youths of political parties supporters especially the ruling party (APC) and the main opposition party (SLPP). This spate of violence among political parties has a remained evident to re-hurt the war wounds likewise undermine effort of promoting peace. Therefore, cognizant of the UN and International Community responsibility for the consolidation of peace in Sierra Leone and for advancement of development as well as preventing the mistake of the past that brought so much destruction and human suffering needs multitude actors. Against this backdrop, Humanist Watch Salone has hatched this idea to use football been the main sporting event that attract the interest and desire of a lot including youths as bridge to foster reconciliation, social cohesion and peace in post-conflict communities of Sierra Leone

As Football all over the world serve as the most attractive sporting activity, it could be used to play a significant role in unifying people regardless of their diverse opinion and belongings. The social innovator of this idea has been the Humanist Watch Salone in collaboration with Government Line Ministry (I.e. Ministry Education, Youths and Sport) and the football Associations of Kailahun and Kenema Districts.
