A digital learning tool proposed by FERS (a French state-approved foundation for success in school) to :
- Teach children the keys to health and well-being,
- Promote tolerance towards the "different" ones (handicap, cognitive disorder...),
- Accompany their discovery of jobs in Health and value their skills,
- Give them confidence in the future.

About Project

Problème : Quel problème ce projet essaie-t-il d'adresser ?

Today, children receive negative feedbacks from "society": financial crisis, job crisis, social crisis... Today, kids also receive stereotyped messages, urging them to act one way or another, depending on their gender, their social backgrounds, their culture... disregarding their own individuality. How can they project themselves with confidence in the future?

We believe we need happy children to get happy and conscious adults. Delivering kids positive messages, valuing their skills in relation to professions, helping them become responsible adults is what we do at FERS. “Healthy & happy at school!” is both a physical (with education material in a case) AND digital tool which benefits from our 23-years of expertise. It is designed to be used in class with strong links to the corpus. Based on stories of children to whom they can relate, it addresses 3 key issues: HEALTH EDUCATION to promote their well-being, SOLIDARITY & TOLERANCE by trying to understand and help the fictive children as a group, and PROFESSIONS DISCOVERY of the adults who could help them (MD, psychologist, nutritionist…).

The class using « Healthy & happy in school! » will hear Chloe’s story, who won’t read what she’s written out loud. Every kid can empathize with her. The first step towards understanding and helping her is a debate around what problem she might have: can she not read? Is she messing around? In a second step, they will find out that Chloe has dyslexia and acquire new knowledge, in line with the corpus (e.g. reading). They will finally discover the jobs of adults who could help them help Chloe: they will for instance discover what Audrey the speech-pathologist does. The sequence ends with the class proposal to help Chloe. At every step, each pupil is valued in what he brings to the group, and the class valued as a group.

Les stratégies de diffusion: Aller de l'avant, quelles sont les principales stratégies pour un impact d'échelle?

For now, we act locally, where our expertise is recognized. But for the first time, the digital-based “Healthy & happy in school!” tool is especially thought through to be easily spread: it will be accessible for free on the internet. In addition, the tool is designed to be used by teachers in autonomy so that we only need to train our partners on how to deliver the message on their territory. We will remain available to them if they have any questions or feedbacks regarding the use of the tool by local teachers. Finally, good care is taken on gender and cultural representations: it will only take small translation adaptations to spread it to teachers across borders. We are now building strong partnerships with nonprofit organizations and academia to help us spread the tool, first in France, then internationally.

There is no other organization working to help pupils aged 5-10 succeed in school through the discovery of professional domains. The success of “Healthy & happy in school!” will rely on FACTS: - Health education is partly done at school, - From Sept. 2014, a change in policy will allow time for “discoveries” during school, thus increasing the market (in France), - Digitally-based tools are revolutionizing teaching (serious games, MOOCs…). Because it will meet the need for innovative pedagogies in a favorable timing, we have great confidence in the success of “Healthy & happy in school!”.

At FERS, we are strong of 23 years of expertise in the field of pedagogic tools development. My colleague and I work on communication, partnerships development and coordinate the rest of the original team: - Dowino, a solidarity and social company expert on digital education tools, - ADES (local association for health education) and MGEN (private company), experts in health education, - French Ministry of education represented by a voluntary teacher, - The municipality of Lyon (which administrates primary schools) represented by a voluntary school nurse. We are currently looking for and will welcome new members with complementary expertise to help us elaborate in more details the content of the tool.

Impact social
Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact. Please specify using qualitative and quantitative data (e.g. # of indirect and direct beneficiaries); help us understand how this solution truly makes a difference.

TARGET: Since 2010 and the renewal of our tools and communication strategy, our tools have benefitted to more than 5000 children, with a 80% yearly increase in 4 years. A total of 96 local schools are regular users of our tools. With this new digital tool, we aim at broadening further our audience, to at least 5000 children a year.
DISCOVER NEW PROFESSIONS AND ACQUIRE SELF-CONFIDENCE: Children know at most 20 stereotyped professions: nurse, baker, policeman, fireman… With this tool, children will learn about more than 20 new professions related to health and understand the value and complementarity of all skills.
PROMOTE HEALTH EDUCATION: We consider health in both body AND mind aspects, and we start from kids’ preoccupations instead of impersonal recommendations (an apple a day…). We believe this way children will be more receptive and prompt to care about their health and well-being.

The spreading of “Healthy & happy in school!” will rely on strong public and private partnerships, as we have done for the past 23 years. For now, ou private partners are participating financially and by doing pro-bonos to initiate the project. We are in the process of looking for other financial supports (through public grants and private philanthropy) to close the budget and start creation.
For after the tool is created, we have consolidated partnerships with municipalities -and are still seeking others- who will finance the spreading of the tool towards the schools they administrate. This way, we ensure the spreading of the tool to teachers who will access it for free, in line with our policy.

Founding Story: Share a story about the "Aha!" moment that led the Partners to get started and/or to see the potential for this to succeed.

The idea for “Healthy & happy in school!” came in two times:
- When I spent 3 days with the flu being completely useless at work, I joked about our next tool being about the importance of health… not so useless after all, because our first researches showed us experts establish a strong connection between health and school success: we had our next subject.
- We have been longing for long to expand our actions to benefit to more people. We were limited by the means in our possession. My colleague met a guy who had just launched its business about making digital-based tools, with values such as “social impact”, “solidarity”… all the keywords were there, and they clicked, if I may say so : we were going to make our tool digital !

About the Co-Creation
Barriers: What main barriers may you have encountered to co-create during the creation and implementation of the project and how did you try to overcome them?

So far, co-creation is really easy for our team. We chose partners with a good sense of listening and humility so that everyone knows the others have something to offer to the group. Complementary expertises and professional cultures ensure that none is a competitor.
For the future, as we are looking for financial supports, we anticipate that companies will probably hesitate to be associated with "market" competitors. We work at FERS with a code of ethics specifying among other things that we are not doing advertisement for any products : this has always helped convincing private partners to associate to our projects, based only on their convictions and engagements for children success.

Governance: What is the type of the relationship between the partners? (e.g. joint venture, contractual relationship, joint project...)

The initial team of partners are bound by the same interest in the project.
Contractual relationships are established between FERS (project leader) and partners in case of financial support or gifts in nature. This ensures the users of our tool that all exchanges respect our code of ethics.

Interaction model: How is the project a transformative partnership? How is the interaction transforming the partnering organizations and their employees/ leadership in terms of creating a new vision, new management practices, new skills and new organizational structures? Please provide for concrete examples

Once again, I insist on the complementarity of the professional cultures and expertise of the initial partners.
- It brings us at FERS a new way of designing tools : with the same media, we learn to address different audiences, i.e. children which we are familiar with, but also adults which we had difficulties to address to.
- It brings our partners specialized in health education a new way of addressing the question : health needs to be taken as a whole (physiology & psychology). We bring them a new pedagogy based on children's concerns, not only governmental policies.
- We learn as a group to define better ways to evaluate our project.
- We believe we open-up the companies we approach as potential financial supporters to the concept of co-creation, its strength in the credit it gives a project and its innovative and valuable positive impact on society.
