Climate change?
Both the government and private sectors have been exerting initiatives to combat the big issue of pollution and food safety. However, until today, none had conceptualized a direct solution to the problem. This paves the way to the birth of "Replenish to Diminish".

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Pollution! Food safety! According to the Survey on the Global Agenda 2014, Asia with a 37% impact will be the worst affected region of the excessive pollution in the developing countries. On February 16, 2015, in an article of the Coconut Manila, Philippines was declared as the 3rd worst contributor to plastic pollution in the ocean based on the study conducted by the University of Georgia. Likewise, rampant food safety issues is observable.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

The idea of “Replenish to Diminish” is to eliminate the use of packaging materials. The main objective is to minimize pollution by the use of glass storage to eliminate the use of packaging materials. Also, to provide storage facilities and maintenance services to assure the food safety and security of the users. Periodic replenishment will vary from place to place accordingly.

The Project entitled “Replenish to Diminish” is a collaborative partnership among companies, government agencies and private sectors. This is a business venture that caters the problems in pollution and food safety. The project includes:  A replenishing station and/or mobile replenishing where the consumer could replenish their everyday needs such as household supplies, personal and hygiene materials and many more.  Project management team who will maintain the station, assist the customers and coordinate with the community. The replenishing station offers replenishment services, equipment maintenance and other related services for various products removing the use of packaging materials.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

Since it is still an idea, the projected future impact is to significantly decrease the pollution in the area. This will be achieved by creating a behavioral pattern for the community which is the practice of "replenishing". Further, with the continuity of this initiative, there is a big possibility that pollution will be totally eliminated. Likewise, food safety issues which usually happens with processed foods such as canned goods, juices, drinks and many more will be addressed through this initiative.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

The main concept is to encourage the customers to practice a habit of “replenishing” their supplies instead of buying packed goods which commonly use plastic. Through collaboration with community officials and assuring the consumers of a safe and quality products, these will help to generate greater participation. This would not only reduce the use of plastic, but also give substantial decrease in their expenses. Further, on the part of the companies, they could be able to apply cost reduction in their production. This would also be a great program for their Corporate Social Responsibility.

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

Financial sustainability can be ensured through a collaborative partnership among companies, government agencies and private sectors. Pollution and food safety as a responsibility of everybody requires a multi-facet action. With these considerations, funding will initially provided through the collaboration of the said institutions. Since it is a social enterprise, sustainability can be ensured through the proper business management.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

Pollution and food safety concern everyone of us. Hence, we are all responsible in addressing this problem. This project proposal is quite different from the ongoing approaches. It entails participatory and social enterprise. This is a win-win approach for every sector. The government could address environment and health concerns. The business sectors can use this as a CSR as well as a Cost-effective strategy. The public, as the main concern, will enjoy a pollution-free surroundings as well as safe and inexpensive supplies. So, this is a team effort for a team benefit!

Founding Story

It was an ordinary day as usual. I took my favorite think-time session! I was about to shampoo my hair when I found that it is empty. I frowned and set aside the bottle together with the other empty bottles of various supplies. I stared at the bottles for so long until I found myself thinking so hard. This thought had been nagging me for so many months. So, I just silently told myself, "Why not?" I'd been a risk-taker since I learned to be independent. I cut my shower into a quick one. Afterwards, I open my computer and surf the internet. And yeah, I found more reasons and inspirations to take a risk and share this crazy but amazing idea that popped out!

Team

The team required for this project will be composed of various individuals from concerned sectors. Government employees, CSOs, NGOs, POs, private companies and the general public will have representative to properly plan and execute this project. Nonetheless, this team will directly involves youth participation to keep them aware of the society's concerns.

Modesty aside, I had been an active student leader. Academically or not, I exert efforts to the things I believe are worth it! I was once a Team Leader for our university for the ENACTUS competition annually held in the country. These program includes various extension projects such as Kabutehan sa Likod ng Rehas and Trash In, Cash Out (both are entrepreneurial initiatives for the inmates of Solano Bureau of Jail Management and Penology); and Juan Tanglad 3G (marketing development for the constituents of Communal , Solano, Nueva Vizcaya). Nevertheless, I am currently the Chairman of our Cooperative (we just started it this year).

I am presently conceptualizing and working for my own small business which deals with learning center and health and wellness.
