About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Unemployment is a serious problem and an issue of greatest concern in Somalia. Youth unemployment levels are extremely high, a resent study done by UNDP has estimated unemployment among youth above 70 percent. Achieving decent employment opportunities is difficult in Somalia. These caused extremist groups to exploite youth financially and hire them in their ranks. Therefore, this project will address the root cause of these issues.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

The approach of this project is two fold; Provision of microfinance schemes to vulonarble youth entrepreneurs who has a briient idea but cant implement because of lack of financing options. the enterprise will lend potential entrepreneures who other wise wouldnt secure funding a start up capital and will provide business advice and guidence. their will be two options to pay back the loan either monthly payment or weakly payment. in this process the enterprise will make an income through administration and service fees. The provision of marketable skills to 200 unemployed youth will result increase of income and employment opportunities and will contribute to the post conflict socio-economic recovery of Somalia.

Provide diversified marketable skills training to youth, this enhanced the skills of unemployed youth and guided them to find alternative livelihood to extremisim and other criminal activities, ACEED had trained nearly 100 youth in dongoroyo district and those trained youth are now working in the field of electricity, ITC, plamping, tailoring and beauty salon, the enterprise has financial supported 10 youth to establish their own businesses.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

The provision of vocational skills has empowered economically 100 unemployed youth who are today employed in ITC, plamping, tailoring and beauty salon these youth would have search income through illegal means, ACEED has also lending capital to 10 youth who established their own business, this result has encouraged the enterprise to reach wider youth population in order to strengthen youth economic growth The project will provide financial support to 100 youth as secod phase of the pilote project. The provision of marketable skills to 200 unemployed youth will result increase of income and employment opportunities and will contribute to the post conflict socio-economic recovery of Somalia, the project will also link unemployed youth to business community in Puntland and above all the project will link youth with potential employers and financial service providers.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

In support of long-term employment opportunities, the project will provide microfinance opportunities for youth. The total expected beneficiaries of this initiative are 100 youth for start up capital and 200 for skill training development. This initiative will be bolstered and supported over time by the establishment of business development centre that focus on youth financing, which will commence with a pilot initiative. the project intends to have a strategic impact on small sized businesses. The project will then place trained individuals to employing instituions and business employers.

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

Usually in Puntland skills trainings are conducted only when there are funds from donors for a specific training course and when there is no donor, there is usually no training and the training facility and equipment get dusty. taking in to account this phenomenal the project is intended to sustain its activities through social enterprise such as income generation from business development centre.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

There are number of non-govermental organisations who are involved in skill trainings, but our model is social enterprise which is different from what other organisations are offering, we are providing space to youth where they can network, engage with the community, find jobs, socialise and entertain them selves, we have a coffee shop a cenim and sports club. we also provide consulting and capacity building services, Our model is unique and inovative in Somali context.

Founding Story

The Collapse of the Somali government in 1991 and the subsequent civil war that engulfed the country for more than two decades caused total disintegration of social and economic infrastructures, it also eroded the capacity of the people, especially Youth to maintain a sustained living. Absence of adequate employment strategies, vibrant economy and structured development plans have exuberated the problems even further leading to high unemployment which in turn lead to some youths’ engagement in criminal activities including extremism. In response to these problems, a group of young intellectuals established a social enterprise called ACEED with the aim of tackling unemployment rate in Somalia

Team

Governing body of ACEED consists of board of directors, that comprises seven directors and the board elects five leadership team from the board, the five key leadership team are active and highly experienced and qualified development professionals with four female and one male members, they are full time active working executives of the organization. They consist of the CEO, scaling part-ner, connector, program strategist and CFO. The leadership team members are having 5– 10 years experience in the development, business and public relations field with national and international exposures.
