About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Unemployment: a large number of qualified graduates still remain jobless months after graduating from colleges/universities and other tertiary institutions.this is mainly because according to the employer, they lack years of work experience; or they have not yet cleared their education loan, thus are not eligible for government jobs. A large number of these youths have different skills people would pay for but they have no avenue to sell them.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

this project seeks to solve this problem in several ways: 1. Skills- we will provide a platform where potential employer not only chooses a freelancer for a job but in doing so, he/she chooses the best suited and the best skill he/she needs. By doing so,a skilled freelancer gets a job and the employer gets the best person for the job. 2. Talents- some jobs require freelancers with more than just skill;with talent. our platform will ensure even talented individuals get a chance to get an income from their specific talent. Unemployed talented individuals get a job, and employed individuals with talent get to supplement their income too. 3.Experience- by completing every job, the freelancer will get adequate experience and grow their skills
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

Consider a scenario where a housewife needs a babysitter for her little girl and a music teacher for her son. Ordinarily the housewife will struggle to find a trustworthy babysitter and music-tutor too and she will probably settle for the first option she gets regardless of the efficiency. Using my project, all she needs to do is post the jobs and their budget on my site and sit back and watch as freelancers bid to do the jobs. On the other side, freelancers will see the job posting and if it matches their skills and talents, they will bid for the jobs. they may opt to provide references or charge less just to get an advantage. the housewife then gets to go through each bid and in the process she chooses the best people to do the jobs.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

The business will employ about 10 people within the first year of operation. These 10 people will be chosen from promising candidates who were not formerly employed. This will ensure at least 10 people get direct employment and thus improve their lives. During the research stage, I called on potential employers whom I identified capable and eager to hire freelancers, I also met several individuals who would freelance. I estimate that from the 100 people I called on, I would average 60 registrations in this first month, thus 60 new jobs and a steady increase after that. With site traffic projected to grow steadily, I have explored firms that have affiliate programs, where I will run ads on my site and they will in-turn pay for the same. This will increase the general income from the site thus maximize profits.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

The business was introduced to cover the 47 counties in the country as the initial target environment. Being an online business, it mainly requires internet access to access our services. The team is thus working on developing an app that eases the operation of the website while improving efficiency of the business itself. The application will be ready by mid next year. The application will come at a crucial time when the business will be looking to venture in the entire East-African market. Our projections are that with entry into the East African market further transition will be smooth.
Sustainability

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

My project will use income from its operations to remain operational as the team explores funding from venture/seed capitalists. Venture capital will give a boost on the project in that we shall be able to carry out countrywide awareness advertising and acquire a bigger team to enhance efficiency. Being an online business, the team has built a website to conduct the business and is currently marketing the business to potential clients countrywide

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

There are existing freelance sites in my target market place. These existing competitors provide freelance services for jobs only done online mainly to do with web and mobile app development and design. My project differs from these approaches in that it incorporates all jobs that an employer can pay for. This includes all jobs whether done online or requiring physical presence of the freelancer; whether hourly, daily, weekly, contract or permanent basis. My project will be all inclusive when it comes to jobs, from handiwork to professional work to talents.

Founding Story

About an year ago, I quit my part-time job with two objectives in mind. The first to complete my school research project and the second to build my own company. I managed to complete my research project and will be graduating in a month. Using my savings, I have established my own company together with my co-founder Florence. For a whole year I conducted research on the best business to venture in. While doing so, I explored employment at some point and that's when my Aha! moment came. I realized the entire hiring process was really flawed and biased and I saw an opportunity to make some change. After months of research I came up with a possible solution and thus this project was born.

Team

I am working with a very able team. The team comprises of Me(the founder), my co-founder (Florence) and the developer(John). My role as the founder is the general oversight of the business to ensure it is working perfectly and smoothly without any hitches. Being my concept idea, its my role to see it is fulfilled. Florence is the co-founder of the business and the one in charge whenever am not present or am unwell. She is a determined individual with a passion for business. She runs a simple catering business in school that is doing so well and this way she is able to supplement her tuition. Together we have agriculture projects at our rural homes where we have collaborated with local youths in projects aimed at improving our lives and those of the community. I believe we are the best fit to run the business. However with her school work she may not always be available thus she works part-time and is a very crucial member of the team. John;the developer; is the guy behind the design and running of the business website. He is an Computer Science student at a local university and also a self-taught expert in web-design. He is available on full -time basis and he ensures the smooth running of the business including the daily changes and updates.

Leadership and the Unilever Awards
Please provide examples of any previous entrepreneurial initiatives you have pioneered.

My other entrepreneurial initiatives are still in the idea stage as I am still conducting market research and general research and also gaining adequate knowledge to kick of the businesses without any hitches. However, I have vast work experience and I believe that all attributes I acquired during this period will be the greatest tools towards success of the business. I have worked as a part-time event planner at a local event planning company for three years; a period in which I developed connections and people skills that are crucial in Marketing my project. My one year internship in a government office in the revenue department;provided me with exposure to various inventory practices and book-keeping too. Probably my biggest achievement was winning a tender to provide vegetables at a County Level Hospital for a year. As challenging as this was, it was my first ever exposure to entrepreneurship and I believe now am better equipped for entrepreneurship and running my own business.

Beyond your existing team, who else are you working with to achieve your objectives, eg partners, advisors, mentors?

I am working with already established entrepreneurs who have several years of experience. These are the mentors and they are really helpful in identifying ways to tackle daily challenges and also advising on ways to penetrate the market and have an advantage over my competitors.
I am also working with my peers who are also establishing their businesses in various field. These peers are very useful as they provide mental support and also challenge me thus keeping me on my toes always.
