Project Summary
Elevator Pitch

Concise Summary: Help us pitch this solution! Provide an explanation within 3-4 short sentences.

Hint: This will be the first introductory text about this project that viewers will see.

Everyone should have access to food. "Potato for You & Me" Project aims mainly to fight hunger, by making the vegetable production affordable and address basic food need for poor in Benin.

WHAT IF - Inspiration: Write one sentence that describes a way that your project dares to ask, "WHAT IF?"

What if a poor is also be abble to eat three times per day and live better without malnutrition related issues??
About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Potatoes in Benin is considered as "rich people" food because the local per kilogram cost is about $1.8 It is however an importnat food within the country and is required since the babies' weaning. Unfortunetly, poor cannot afford it. its high cost has also lead to increase of others vegetables or food price.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

Start a large scale irrigated production of potato; with effective combination of water use efficiency-land conservation-green manure-yield upgrade-clean energy for power generation, sustainable agricultural practices. The goal is to reduce the per kilogram cost by 2 at least. It will be an income for me, job creation for the farmers and others; and the most important is the product availability all years round possible. The reduction in potato's price will consequently lead to reduction in others food crop. The scientific part of the project will be detailed in my Master Thesis dissertation which will start in March in The PanAfrican University of Water and Energy Sciences based in Algeria.

The project has not yet received awards or honors because it is new and will be implemented.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

For instance, - if 10 farmers (men or women) are working within this project, 10 families life will change, that means an average of 20 children with access to good education. - if potato is affordable, others vegetables will also be affordable (oignon, green peper for example) - if the per kilogram cost is reduced by two, the families could have the facility to care about others staff (money save and improvement of living conditions). Decrease of malnutrition rate.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

Projected future impact: Food security: availability, access and stability of food especially for poor household Training impact: sustainable agricultural skills gain by the local community Income: source of revenue for the local communtiy or any stakeholders involved Environnemental impact: control of climate change repercussions, land and water conservation, maintain of biodiversity Economical impact: improve in country economy when potato export will follow sufficient feeding Sanitation impact: the use of the water resource can lead the country to finally implement sewage systems (municipal or industrial wastewater recycle treatment and reuse), to balance between the future increase demand and any further shortage of the resource.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

Practice of Climate Smart Agriculture to overcome the effects of intense agriculture on cimate change; Use of clean energy Agrochemicals control Education of farmers (create a local farmers association, train them and involve them in decision making) Application of water harvesting Effective mitigation and monitoring of the different environmental effects and increase in benefits Open to environmental audit Extend of the project in others African Countries Further scientific research for better improve Respect of national and international policies and agreements

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

Since it is a business project, a kind of "produce and sale" so the sustainability will mainly be ensured by the revenues. However, we need a first income or a first external financial support to start. (Buying the farming land, the machinery, the irrigation equipment, the softwares...)

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

Apparently no one but if it was the case, the difference is that I master my subject. I studied it, I think it could work better.

Founding Story

I was thinking: 1. it is not a water scarced country 2. Irrigation is not practiced 3. Basic food crop are expensive and sometimes staple food! 4.Malnutrition is still an issue ! People are suffering 5. There is a great agricultural potentiality in term of water, soil, climate, "human resources" but nothing is done! 6. I have been educated in Integrated Water Resources Management, Water for Agriculture! 7: True, I want to start my business but I also want to help people, to create jobs, to change people life , to make them happy "Aha"! I have to do this. I have to start it!
