Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Batik Bakau (Mangrove Batik) is wholeheartedly made of the care on batik and the awareness of environmental problem in mangrove area. Seeing the reduce number of small batik industries movement, the huge destruction on mangrove area and waste management, and the economy growth of coastal area citizen are the obstacles that mangrove batik are trying to solve.

There are three main problems raised by batik bakau such as the the reduce number of small batik industries movement, the huge destruction on mangrove area and waste management, and the economy growth of coastal area citizen. Based on the problems mentioned, Batik Bakau has already started the solution since 2011 when commenced the enterprise such as reiterating the live of micro batik business industries by creating a distinct product- mangrove batik with its natural dyeing, improving the management of mangrove waste and people awareness on mangrove areas and inviting the women (moms) in coastal area to be a batik maker and produce an income for their financial needs.

Batik Bakau is micro business industry producing an original batik with friendly disposal. Moreover, it concepts the products with a unique motif of coastal area. So, that people could be attracted to the quality of mangrove batik (Batik Bakau), and step by step reactivate the life of micro batik industry. Another impact is seen on the training in making batik from natural dyeing. It was done in order to spread the knowledge and spirit of preserving Indonesian culture, awareness of managing the waste and mangrove area itself, and empowering Indonesia to commence a small industry which care on green concept. Recently, the realization of the solutions are also made through some social media such as twitter, facebook, website, and instagram.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

Running a business in creating batik with an eco-friendly concept, now, mangrove batik has been significantly seen by people. The data estimated on the increasing number of followers in social media around 100-500 followers. The increasing number of product requested in a month which is only 5 to 10 pieces of mangrove batik, now, it raise up to 15 to 20 pieces in a month. It shows that the customers now, consistently aware on the existence of mangrove batik and simultaneously the message on using mangrove waste and how to preserve the mangrove area is also received by the customers. Moreover, the increasing number of awareness to batik with natural dyeing and the mangrove area itself, helped by the owner activity who usually join the seminars and workshop on entrepreneurship and environment.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

1. Joining the artisan community of Indonesian batik natural dyeing. So, that batik bakau will actively research and improve the quality of the natural dyeing to produce more various batik production which are care on the environment as well. 2. Actively embracing the partnership with regional government, province level government and central level government. 3. Colaborating with some well-known Indonesian designers to produce an eco-friendly fashion concept. 4. Creating Kampung Batik Bakau (Batik Bakau Village)

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

Batik Bakau has two major internal income sources, those are the production income and the training package service. Fortunately, batik bakau, now, regularly produces batik every month which usually reach a profit around 5 to 10 million rupiahs in a month. The other income source is coming from batik bakau training services. Additionally, there are some tentative incomes from some companies CSR program jooining with Batik Bakau.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

As many batik industries exist in introducing the products with its colorful dyeing usually made of a synthetic dyeing, batik bakau comes up with the distinguish product by creating batik with natural dyeing which is made from the mangrove waste. As an original product of Indonesia, batik bakau, of course, targeted the national level customers in order to tell them in choosing the eco-friendly product. Beside it also targeted the international market especially for the batik enthusiast to introduce the heritage of Indonesian culture which cares on environmental sustainability.

Founding Story

Batik Bakau is established in 2011 as the continuity of Climate Smart Leader 2011 environmental project. The progression of batik bakau is not yet stop on the project, but it is continued to training the women in coastal area to be the artisan who create batik and natural dyeing. The aftermath of the declaration as an eco-friendly batik artisan, batik bakau broaden its progress by actively joined some seminars and conferences to introduce and to promote the product since 2012 and starting to join some fashion shows in Jakarta and Semarang in 2013.

Team

Batik Bakau is run by a dedicated team consist of Cahyadi Adhe Kurniawan as the CEO and batik maker. Ismi Putri Rahmah as a marketeer and public relation. Lastly, Afriza Aziz as the designer and fashion show stylist. They work with passion on batik and environment. By combining these talented young generation, Batik Bakau believes that the creative marketing and progression on eco-friendly batik can be reached.

Joining the Climate Smart Leader 2011 and becoming the trainer at International conference Restoring Coastal Livelihood at Bogor, Indonesia gave batik bakau knowledge in managing the enterprise and international networking to the world-based community concerns on environment. The advantages of this condition that batik bakau can stately be known by some countries joining the conference. Lastly, by winning as the runner up at HILO Green Leader 2015 gave a lot of experiences especially in empowering more young leaders to be aware on mangrove area and produce green entrepreneurship concept which is beneficial for the enterprise, people and environment.

Beyond your existing team, who else are you working with to achieve your objectives, eg partners, advisors, mentors?

There is a private community joined by the owner as alumni of KeSEMaT mangrove volunteer University of Diponegoro, Semarang. All the members are the alumni of KeSEMaT mangrove volunteer who are also be the advisers for some program and improvement of batik bakau. Beside some advisory council in this union, there is also the closest agent who is definitely helped the success of batik bakau, they are the artisan (the workers) who create this eco-friendly batik product.
