Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

1.High disposal cost of sludge to landfills. 2.High carbon emissions into atmosphere contributed from sludge. 3.The conventional technology to produce biochar can pose environmental pollution, has slow and inconsistency burning process, with less biochar quality produced. 4.The dependency of chemical fertilizers for plantation has a high cost implication. 5.Solid fuel creates massive air pollution.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

1.Our technology can save plant’s OPEX by approx. 20%-50% since no more sludge disposal at landfills. 2.This new way of recycling sludge can reduce carbon emissions into atmosphere since it has turned into a stable carbon material. 3.Environmentally friendly which use clean energy with consistently rapid burning process produces high quality of biochar. 4.Biochar is the most powerful soil enhancement agent which increases crops’ yield by at least 3 times while effectively sequestrates carbon. 5.Biochar with a high carbon content is a renewable energy for fuel that gives faster heating and generates less smoke, therefore, the best substitute of solid fuel for energy sector.

Previously, all the sewage sludge are taken to the landfills once they are collected from the treatment plants. with our system, they are no longer sent to the landfills, but instead are carbonized. Biochar, is then produced. most notable application of biochar is for soil remediation and enhancement. Infertile lands can now be an agricultural haven. harvesting periods can possible be extended into harsh weather seasons. ultimately, we are looking at a better food security, throughout the world. Biochar is a great fossil fuel substitute especially in the energy sector. Power plants can harvest the potential of biochar as and at the same time save the environment by not only reduce the coal mining activities but lower diesel consumption.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

1.Generating positive cashflows for our system users as the bio-solids disposal cost will be eliminated by 20-50% coupled with the biochar sales with export market price of USD200-600/tonne. 2.Sustainable biochar implementation could offset a maximum of 12% of anthropogenic GHG emissions per annum. Over the course of 100 years, this amounts to a total of roughly 130 petagrams (106 metric tons) of CO2-equivalents. 3.To make Malaysia as an important biochar exporter being a soil remediation and enhancement agent. Food security is an important factor driving the demand, with the erratic climate and weather conditions as well as growing population of people. More crops can be harvested. Supply of agricultural products will therefore increase, and with it, an economic expansion. 4.Biochar to be marketed as green coal for heating fuel to improve society’s consciousness and save environment.

1.To target the group of customers whom depending entirely on our technology. The adjacent groups will come later after our solution has been validated by the early adopters. 2.To identify the best design that scalable to fit a range of different customers. 3.Risk reversal model to be focused since this investment is high to enable our technology to be fundable. 4.To ensure social sustainability which reflects the design need nowadays, which is a compact, modular and mobile for a greater flexibilities. 5.To complete our product profile with reputable third parties’ certifications.

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

1.Raising funds by applying suitable grants and inviting credible investors to invest into the company. We may offer investors a partial if not a complete conversion of debt into equity. 2.Revenue Model: i.Outright sale as system integrator -Selling system directly to clients or through partners. ii.Recurring sale -Providing maintenance services periodically by outsource parties. ii.Outright sale as biochar producer –Selling/exporting biochars.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

3 methods available in the marketplace currently employed to produce biochar which are direct burning (traditional open burning), incineration and material thermal conductivity (conventional pyrolysis). Our technology gives the best performance compared to these systems as it produces rapid process at least 50% faster, using clean energy (electricity) as a source for energy, precise and consistent over process control at least 90%, environmentally friendly as it emits very less harmful gases and produces higher quality of biochar.It requires only low heat (300-500◦C) to fully burn efficiently.

Founding Story

In a current practice, conventional system has been used many years ago to burn biomass. The source for energy used is fossil fuel, which releases harmful gases into the air. Recognizing this method is problematic to our atmosphere, 10 years of research has lead us to develop the most sustainable biomass treatment technology. Additionally, there are many pressing issues surrounding waste management caused from the improper handling and disposal of wastes globally which we foresee this is the right time for us to move another step. We are dedicated to support zero waste concept and committed to protect the environment.


Our team consist of UPM expert leaders in environment, waste management and renewable energy who experienced in vast researchers, Prof.Dr.Azni (full-time) and Dr.Mohammad Amran (Co-founder -full time) as the research and technology experts and overall technical advisors. As a working committee for Biochar Standard Development of International Biochar Initiatives (IBI), Dr. Amran has strong link with various parties associated with biochar producers and end users in which contributing to the business networkings. Ms Atiyyah (Co-founder -full time), who experienced in project management and business development with a combination of 6 years’ experience in sales, marketing, product development acts as the team leader, coordinating the team to drive towards success. Mr. Mohammad Zaim (part-time) with a background in economics and finance advise the team in his areas especially in budget management and contract management, while Mr. Zarizi (part-time) who specialize in mechanical engineering advise us in system’s process design and troubleshooting. As the project grows, we position ourselves as consultants to give the best expertise and consultancy in the biochar field, both in sustainable agricultural and energy sectors.
