About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Food insecurity centers on drought, scarcity of seeds and fertilizers, deterioration in marketing infrastructure , rapid population growth that cannot afford inorganic fertilizer. Absence of livestock to provide manure, inability/lack of skills to utilize available resources, lack of emergency plans, degraded soil structure and the nature of Agricultural activities do not create jobs for others, we will address these challenges.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

The Organic Fertilizer Premix encourages the rearing of livestock thus an income for households (path out of poverty). Animals' dung is raw materials for well packaged organic fertilizer that retain moisture; crops can survive draught though the retained moisture. It improves soil structure, uses locally available resources thus a relief on Malawi' depleted foreign reserves, its 45% cheaper than inorganic; affordable for the poor farmers. Some shops are rural based (agro - dealers) - are being trained how to run business and no need for farmer to travel long distances. The project in question is addressing multiple problems the most important aspect is its affordability to the poorest households and the job creation entity.

Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

The project has provided readily available inputs to vegetable growers during summer time as well as to farmers who mostly cannot afford expensive inorganic fertilizer, this products are 45% cheaper , its available to the poor of the poorest through agro dealers that are based in the rural areas. The project team trains the growers on the application process. Not only that the Project in the mean time is providing work for over 20 people and its likely to provide employment for over 500 peoples if the plant is erected. We will be encouraging farmers to raise animals at household level and then in turn we will procure the manure for processing for crop production as such those active will walk out of the path of poverty.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

Over 500 farmers have benefitted to the innovation. In 2014 some parts of Malawi experienced draught but the 200 farmers who used the fertilizer managed to harvest more as compared to those who used inorganic fertilizer as it retains moisture. One of the biggest supplier of vegetable to chain stores shop rites has adopted and supplies organic veggies to the shop which is health for the people On temporary basis, 100 people have realized an income through the labour they offered to us and through collection of the raw materials which they sell to us Plans Resource mobilization for expansion Research and development; the goal is to make the product as cheap and effective, we will research more to get best results Establish three plants (farms in each region ( animal farms) Mobilize 1500 farmers to raise animals (500 in each region) Expand to other three neighboring countries

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

In 2015: Establishment of demonstration plots, marketing of the products to reach over 2000 farmers, fundraising for machines, animals, certification, establishment of rural based network. Key here is resource mobilization for machinery, warehousing and establishment of animal farm. In 2016:Fundraising for machines,Warehouse, certification,. The aims is to reach over 200,000 farmers if resouces are available 2017: Well established Company with 100 employees with over 2000 animals providing raw materials and reaching 500,000- 1,000,000 farmers. 2018: Expand to three neighboring countries.
Sustainability

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

The team will fund raise the money through friends and families. We will also sell shares of the Company to raise more money almost 30% can be sold to serious investors to raise capital for warehouse, machinery, inputs. We will partner with NGOs to train farmers in crop production using our products and also how to avoid post harvest losses , creation of revolving funds for continued customer niche and charge 5% administrative fee.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

We are aware that Millennium challenge of UN has been training farmers on how to use similar products, other NGOs are also doing the same but are not making big stride because its charity. The difference with us is that we believe that this must be commercialized and packaged in attractive way but research more to make it cheaper as possible. Handouts do encourage laziness and dependency. We are working to make the organic as clean as the inorganic fertilizer in the way it looks, well packaged, available to many farmers throughout the country and beyond.

Founding Story

One of the founders worked in a Millennium Villages and this was one of the products being encouraged, he realized that much as farmers were being taught how to make the organic fertilizer, they still eye the inorganic fertilizer and adoption was very low. A year later, he left and started doing farming and one of the piece of land he grew maize using the premixes on trial bases. When I visited his farm he showed me and I hinted to him that this product can be packaged and marketed out to farmers. I have been following the issues of fertilizer subsidy in Malawi which consumes a lot of Government money and I looked at this as an alternative as it is cheaper using local materials.
