The project is about creating Eco & adventure tourism community enterprise in a form of a theme park whereby women will acquire skills to use their natural resources sustainably, in order to create employment to boost their livelihoods. And also to improve local economy thus poverty alleviation.

WHAT IF - Inspiration: Write one sentence that describes a way that your project dares to ask, "WHAT IF?"

What if women were to get decent employment near their home, and children won't have to be neglected by migrating mothers?
About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Lesotho has a high unemployment rate, most pronounced in rural areas, youth and females. For this reason, the country’s economically active population tends to migrate to other countries, like South Africa, seeking jobs. To a certain extent migration, by members of the population beyond international borders is an indication of disequilibrium between supply and demand in the labor market.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

The intervention of this project is to engage the community, with more emphasis on women, in eco and adventure tourism enterprises in order to improve their livelihoods as well as augment their income-earning opportunities. We propose to achieve this overall goal through establishment of a theme park. Major goal is to reduce poverty and unemployment. whereby local women will be employed in the park to showcase their skills . One specific objective of the theme park is to provide the local community with a platform to work together, exchange skills and learn new skills while working.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

In the mountains of Lesotho, 'Malehloara from 'Moteng community in Butha Bothe district was formally trained into handy crafts making . Which she later shared with her daughters, currently selling their products at Liphofung cave (tourist attraction) due to lack of products marketing, not many tourist buy the curio therefore this does not earn them decent income. This has lead to 'Malehoara's daughters to seek employment in South Africa, and caused her to neglect her children. Now 'Malehloara needs to take care of her daughters children instead of transferring learned skills to other woman . By establishing the theme park locally produced handy crafts will be well marketed and 'Malehloara will be able to transfer the skills to other women.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

The project is at an idea stage, but the projected future impact is to engage the ‘Moteng community, with more emphasis on women, in eco and adventure tourism enterprises in order to improve their livelihoods as well as augment their income-earning opportunities. This will be done by helping them use their natural resources sustainably.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

Our aim is to turn 'Moteng community into a fully functional eco and adventure tourism destination, whereby women in the community will be offering eco tourism services to tourists .The women will also have a platform to transfer the acquired skills among each other, and the plan is in 5 years time from the initial stage have women who will be able to train and share the skills of using natural resources sustainably with other women from all Butha Bothe communities. This will be helping in reducing the rate of women migrating to South Africa for employment, thus neglecting children.

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

The revenue generate from the activities will go towards maintenance and operations of the park, this includes marketing, staff remuneration, minor and major maintenance of machinery and facility as a whole. The profits will be shared between the partners the LCCF as the community representative in this project, we will also identify good causes to support in the community in relation to education, health, agriculture, sports, water & sanitation

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

We are mainly focusing on women as major beneficiaries of the project. The community owns 40% of the project. Unlike other local eco and adventure tourism service providers, with us the tourists will be able experience products being crafted in their presence. We are a green business in a way, because most of the raw materials used will be from natural environment. Also the locals will supply the theme park with the local produced materials and services like food stuff and horse riding and tour guiding.

Founding Story

Many children in 'Moteng community are under care of their grandparents, and when asked about the whereabouts of their mothers, I discovered that most of the mothers migrated to South Africa to become domestic workers. I later realised that most of the elderly women in the community posses handy craft skills that they might die with if not transferred, so i thought of how we can keep mother in their homes. The idea of using natural resources and skills posses by older women crossed my mind and i thought one stop shop of skill transfer, producing and selling of the crafts would make a change in their lives.
