We create a business model in order to build a filter out of local materials, such as clay and used coffee grounds that purifies water of bacterial contamination. We also raise awareness of the importance of safe water through trainings with the local community.

About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

More than 800 million people around the world do not have access to safe drinking water; 4,000 children die because of contaminated water every day. We are addressing this lack of access.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

In our pilot project in Kibwigwa, Tanzania, we create together, with our people in need, a business model in order to build the filter and sell it at an affordable price. At the same time, we raise awareness of the importance of safe water through trainings in collaboration with the local community. Thus, we develop new economic opportunities to people and provide access to safe drinking water. This year, we flew down to Tanzania twice to educate our first Waterpreneurs locally and jointly opened our first shop to start the sale of waterfilter. In the next step, we will ensure that our social business model will become a self-sustainable system on a long-term basis by extending it through our train-the-trainer concept to other regions.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

The filter we designed helps families to gain safe drinking water in the first place. It further offers employment for the local population.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

Our first Waterpreneurs have opened their shop in Kibwigwa and are selling successfully filters. Even though the local population still needs to be more educated about those issues the leading steps are made. Those families who purchased the filter have been reviewing their experiences in a positive way. This leads us to the conclusion that the project is on a prospering way.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

We are standing at the very beginning of this project; our utmost concern is to establish the pilot project in Kibwigwa so that our help will not be needed anymore. Afterwards we wish to learn from the successful strategies used and employ them in other areas.

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

The initiative itself is supposed to sustain autonomous. As the concept is combined with an entrepreneurial approach the sustainability should be guaranteed by a successful business plan.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

Our project is outstanding as we go further than only giving the filters to people but increase its value by offering jobs in a self-sustainable system.
