About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

1 million women graduate every year in Pakistan and most of them remain underutilized because of societal and lifestyle barriers. Pakistan will have 40 million smartphones by 2016, and $100m is the overall e-commerce market share as of Dec 2014. How do we use this trend to unlock opportunities specially for women at home, who have skills to thrive in the marketplace but require exposure and appropriate path to channelize their skills?

HerFloor.com, a venture of HerCareer.pk, is an all-in-one community for women to buy and sell products or services, share experiences and connect with like-minded women. All they need to do is create a profile on HerFloor and start selling products or services right from their smartphone. We take care of payment, end-to-end logistics for them and promote their profiles, products and services across various channels both online and offline. This way their time is saved and they are able to focus on making things and growing their customer base.

Sara K. a 28 year old mother of 2 has an MBA degree. She was not aware of ways she can work right from the comfort of her home. She is then introduced to HerFloor by her friend and listed her content marketing services at USD 20 (PKR 2000)/article in 2 days. A digital marketing agency visited her profile and ordered her services by paying in advance. She then delivered the article and received her payment. Yasmeen Q. a 24 year old produces handmade bags and is looking for new marketplace to sell her products. She listed her products. A customer from US bought 2 bags from her by paying in advance. HerFloor arranged the delivery of bags and Yasmeen got paid.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

We've launched the private beta on Nov 19, 2015. In the first phase, 1 million educated women will be given access to the marketplace and they will be guided on how to create products/services listing for better conversion rate. Next, we will visit underprivileged areas in Karachi, Lahore and other areas of the country to conduct workshops on selling online. We will also reach out to textile manufacturers, designers and connect them to our creative artisans.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

We have created an easy to use yet powerful technology platform for millions of women, where we connect women to income generation opportunities, as well as to like-minded women via Q&A Circles. 30 million girls and women can be brought onto the marketplace by leveraging the network of educational institutes across the country.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

HerFloor.com is in a unique position to own this space. We do not have any direct competition but global players like Fiverr, OLX, Kaymu and Etsy are the main competition. We believe that focusing on locally and location relevant skills will shield HerFloor from potential competition. Fiverr, Kaymu and Etsy charges commission every time a product is sold - this makes it costly for both sellers and buyers. At HerFloor, sellers won't be charged any commission.

Founding Story

The founder is an Internet Entrepreneur, with 13 years of experience in digital marketing, UX, business development and ecommerce. A computer geek from the moment he could type, He built his first Internet property at the age of 13 and started his digital agency in 2003. Working online has changed his life completely and he believes the same can be replicated by others. In 2013, he launched HerCareer.pk, an online careers community of women, and through that has understood the pain of women who have degrees and skills but face various barriers. He then planned to launch a new marketplace for women who are anxious to utilize their skills and talents but do not know how to do it online.
