Project Summary
Elevator Pitch

Concise Summary: Help us pitch this solution! Provide an explanation within 3-4 short sentences.

Idea of this project is to find a solution for purifying waste water for drinking and other purposes in rural areas with low cost by creating an inventory of plant mediated Iron nano (Fe-NP) filter paper that have been used for water and waste water purification.

WHAT IF - Inspiration: Write one sentence that describes a way that your project dares to ask, "WHAT IF?"

What if waste water could be purified through plant mediated Iron nano filter paper and stop the next world war for water?
About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Waste water is a big challenge in many countries in African region as it kills nearly 5 million people annually. Thus, treating the waste water to be able to be used for day to day life of people would be a better solution for reducing the loss of valuable human lives. However, it has to be affordable. Here is the way, plant mediated Iron nano filter papers !

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

Our main objective is to achieve high efficiency in removing a broad spectrum of heavy metals (mainly As,Cd), Nitrates(NO3-), Phosphates (PO4 3-) & turbidity, and reducing coli form bacteria from water, especially from waste water by using a filter paper coated or impregnated with plant mediated Iron nano particles.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

The chemistry laboratory of the Eastern University of Sri Lanka directly dumps its chemical wastes into its surroundings. It leads to a huge chemical hazard into the students and the communities living around the campus premises in future. The university officials are currently figuring out a sustainable management strategy to effectively resolve the problem. Our main goal is to treat this waste water by using our novel filter paper coated with Iron nano particles, there by ensuring that the surrounding environment not contaminated by heavy metal ions and other waste water related problems.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

We believe that our novel product will have a minimum 90% success rate, We hope to create a safe environment for students and surrounding communities in future.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

Once we reach our goal at the Eastern University, we have planned to distribute our product throughout Sri Lanka, targeting chemical hazard sites. If this mission is successful we have further ideas to test our products efficiency world wide.
Sustainability

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

I plan to create my novel filter in Eastern university chemistry lab with aid of my own initial investment and later on i will apply for a grant to finish the end product.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

There are several companies that offer water treatment systems with traditional technologies with high operational cost. My findings would ensure to serve the communities in a sustainable manner. My idea is to create a heavy metal free environment throughout the world.
Team

Team

I'm the chemist involved in the synthesis of novel filter paper with under the supervision of Dr.S.Arasatenam and Dr. Dilru Ratnaweera. Lab technicians from Eastern university will assist this project.
