About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

According to the last Census in Ecuador, the population reached 16 million people. This year, young people (0 to 15 years old) made up 31.26% of the population. From this group, 25,3% present chronic undernourishment, representing near a million and a half of children and adolescent in Ecuador. Worldwide, 15% of the children and adolescent population suffer from undernourishment. This condition does not allow them o sustain proper health and grow

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

Traveler weighing object (TWO) is an easy and economical way for the identification of this health related issues on a first approximation, especially in rural areas. With the use of a smartphone, the TWO and a user-friendly app, anyone will be able to detect signs of chronic undernourishment. But the effort is not complete just with the identification, the app will allow us to link rural doctors with the children, helping to carry the medical help where it is needed. All the data including medical history generated will be transferred to the nearest medical center, to be analyzed and to create histories getting indicators of undernourishment in the zone, accelerating in this way the implementation of improvements in rural health systems

Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

Despite several efforts in order to eliminate undernourishment, in Ecuador, we do not have a system that allows to determine in a simple way if a child or an adolescent suffers from undernourishment. Besides, in rural areas the effort is even harder, as reaching children and keeping track on their health is difficult. Having a simple device and a platform that allows to identify if a child suffers from undernourishment and to get help for them will be a game changer. On top of that, knowing the exact amount of children in need of help and their location will help to improve the health systems in rural areas.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

In a country that has the resources to feed everyone, we can not allow kids to suffer from undernourishment; specially when 15% of the population corresponds to those kids with undernourishment. Improving those 1.5 million children and adolescents quality of life, and ensuring a proper development and adequate growth with a bright future will impact the future of the whole country.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

Our main goal is to eradicate undernourishment in Ecuador in the next five years, through the identification of undernourished children and adolescents and through action taking in order to help them, putting them in contact with doctors and improving their nutrition regimes. We also would love to use the system in other countries with similar characteristics (Andean region or not), in hope to eradicate children undernourishment globally. This effort can only be carried out with the help of other NGOs and foundations, but mainly through governmental policies that allow to achieve the results

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

The main financial sustainability plan is based on governmental aid, like ministries or health institutions. We also plan to reach international NGOs or foundations interested in using the system in other countries.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

The problem is being addressed through nutrition plans. In Ecuador, these plans have not been efficient, because sometimes they are not targeted to the children and adolescent in real need of them, and sometimes because there is not follow up of the results mainly based on the fact that it is difficult without the conditions in rural areas. Our project proposes a way to identify accurately which kids need help, and to carry on a follow up plan. It is not a competitive project, but one that works side-to-side with the nutrition plans.

Founding Story

Having worked with several organizations in subjects related to children rights lead me to question what was the main concern in their quality of life right now. Several issues have been improved over the years in Ecuador, but one of the persistent problems is undernourishment. It does not matter how many efforts have been made, it is still a great fact of concern, and the statistics have not changed that much over the years.

Our team is composed by several people of different backgrounds and professional qualifications. Two of us are chemical engineers, two are electric engineers and one is a medical doctor. Two of us are women. We are dedicated on a full-time base to the development of projects that we hope will help achieve the global goals. We all have different skills and complement each other on the work. We do have roles assigned and responsibilities linked to each role, but we do not have titles and each role is equal in importance. As the project grows, we will keep our composition and methodology like we have so far.

Leadership and the Unilever Awards
Please provide examples of any previous entrepreneurial initiatives you have pioneered.

I consider an entrepeneurial accomplishment the fourth place and honor mention in Odebrecht award for sustainable development, with a project titled “Sustainable development of an adsorbent and biodegradable material, from banana peels, for the discoloration of wastewater from the textile industries of Pelileo city, Tungurahua province, and its posterior use in the production of biol and organic fertilizer”. It is not the award what I consider the accomplishment, but rather the fact that our team was able to develop a really simple solution for the contamination problem in Pelileo. Banana peels could be sun dried and used to discolor textile wastewater. Innovation sometimes hides behind the simplest ideas, and being able to identify it lightens me.

Beyond your existing team, who else are you working with to achieve your objectives, eg partners, advisors, mentors?

Besides our team, we are working with a great network composed by friends, family and advisors. They all have shown their support and most important their feedback in the development of all of our projects.

Hello, I herd about a similar project in India. You should ask google it could give you some ideas !
