About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Every day urban spaces are removing space to the soil, and plants and trees that helps to clean the air are losing space in the cities. Food habits are becoming a health problem, eating fruits and vegetables are no easy like eat "fast food" by their accessibility or cost. People want to seed plants or begin small orchard but don't have knowledge about the plants that can to seed and how to, or tools and things that need to do it.

In the first phase, the solution is an app that help the user how to start His own urban garden. The user will begin at level one, the app will tell to the user the tools and things that need to begin the garden. Every day the app will tell the user when to water the garden and how is the aspect that should have the plants. The app recommends how to Prepare the organic fertilizer depending the level and the plant that are growing at that time. Also the app Generates care tips to the plants, and tips how to recover the plant if is stressed by problems of sun, water or soil. The App will begin with the seeds of beans, tomatoes or lettuce in middle levels and Could Suggest to plant an orchid or bonsai in high levels.

We have a family of three members, parents and son. Mom download the app, after that, they choose the part of the house where they will begin to seed the orchard. The app suggests the tools and materials to begin, then they go to the supermarket to buy it. In house under the instructions of the app they will begin to seed. Two times in the day, Mom receives the alerts in her smartphone to water the plants, she phones to her son to remember to water the plant and tell about the hint of the day. After a weeks of group work, the first beans are ready for a delicious salad. Now the family are ready for begin to seed tomatoes.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

Our focus is help to build gardens or orchards as family projects, parents spending time with their kids, people planting and harvesting their food, this with the aid of their smartphones. Now, 7 people are using the app in the levels 1 to 3. Two of them have used their beans of the level 1 in a salad. We expect to generate an average of 5 square meters per family of urban gardens, and an average 5k users per city in Ecuador, generating 25k of square meter per city that will aid to absorb CO2. The process around growing of plants will create a conscience about care of the soil and the conservation of forest and plants from the adults until kids. The kids will grow up with the love of nature, knowing the care and effort needed to get products from the soil. Families will add organic products to their menu decreasing the spending in food and improving the way that they feed.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

A lot of people in the world really want a change in their style of life, this is our principal motivation to think that the app will have a long life. According with the number of users that will use the app, we will develop an "marketplace", for example if one family have become expert in the seeding of tomatoes, they could choose to interchange or sell to another family that become expert in another vegetable or fruit. With this "Marketplace" we want to identify experts in create orchards, help them to join and identify area, where they could begin their own Plant nursery.

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

We need a budget to start, because we need to use cloud services, graphic designers and develop some web services. When the app is available for all the users, the main financial source of the project will be the publicity in the free app, if the users want to use a version without publicity, they should pay for the app, at the same time, we are planning to open a shop where we will sell seed and organic fertilizer.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

Some organizations have efforts to increase the urban gardens by conventional ways, but We do not have direct competence that has developed an app with our features. We propose to increase the urban gardens using an app for smartphones where users should complete levels and activities per day like "Candy Crush" who has a lot of users and followers, we want to emulate this, a game with levels and with each level, activities that help to continue to the next level. We will focus on a popular topic but with a non-explored strategy.

Founding Story

6 months ago I bought a plant in a plant nursery, after that I began to water it every day, but at the end of the first month, the plant wasn't better that when I bought it. Then I searched in internet information about how to care a plant and I found some tips, was in that moment when I had de idea of a smartphone to aid to care plants. After that I asked some people about their attempts of start a garden at their house, many told me that they couldn't continue from seeding basic plants because they don't have enough knowledge, then was when I began to write the idea of how the smartphone and gadgets could help to begin or improve a garden.
