About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

The great problem is: very old people with lack of mobility,culturally diverse seniors or people with a lower educational background, neglected youngsters. More specific problem: Yet, as we age today, we tend to be in much better health than previous generations. With the existing pension system, there are more and more relatively young pensioners with valuable experiences and vast knowledge. It is a great pity that people, after they stop working, take away their treasures of knowledge and do not share them with others. Nevertheless, there are young pensioners who want to stay active and pass their valuable skills and experience, skills and competencies that younger people can draw on and benefit from. we will reactivate these young pensioners with the young generation, reflecting each other. • Today facing the problem of seniors' loneliness in big cities,we want to address to the depression of seniors, combating their loneliness,giving a ‘‘bridge’’ between generations, cooperating and reactivating them with the youth • low self esteem, low self cognition of seniors • usage of the intellectual potential of forgotten people or the ones being outside the course of events • lack of ICT communication skills for senior adults, as it is not easy for them to decide to learn • lack of knowledge of the outside world about a small group of forgotten people in society • How memories can be good and bad and how we learn from them • How we can show how much learners are benefiting from the project to activate “The Third Age People” – the witnesses of history to write down and hand down their life stories form generation to generation. • lack of activities/events for seniors for learning a healthy life style. • lack of no solidarity and cooperation between the two generations.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

•organizing local workshops-meetings with seniors and youth learners, expressing their life stories, create their memory boxes, reflect and share them. •organizing a portable exhibition in our region (West Greece) and in European participating countries with memory boxes with the seniors' life stories • organizing workshops for seniors in Art, painting, craft, music, traditional dances, local history, culture courses and book club to stimulate motivation for seniors,gain new skills, competencies and transfer knowledge to the youth, while the unemployed youngsters are the educators. • to activate “The Third Age People” – the witnesses of history to write down their life stories in memory boxes. • fostering creativity, inter generational learning in later life and encourage meaningful participation of seniors in Art, as creators and real protagonists, while the youngsters in response will reward them by helping them obtaining ICT communication skills (in social media: Skype, face book). •creating a portal for on line communication, via which all citizens will interact and the young will teach the seniors, transferring our expertise to the local, regional and European community. The project provides seniors citizens and youngsters with “pathways” to improve their ICT communication skills, Art, Craft and social interaction skills, because often older people in society feel lonely, marginalized and neglected by others, wishing to regain self-esteem and the lust for life, by creating and contributing a good community living, being given the opportunity to use their skills for the benefit of youngsters. In turn the youngsters receive from the senior citizens the affection and warmth that is often lacking in the modern family or parent’s busy or absent. Inter-generational involvement in community activities can empower youngsters to reduce the problems caused by drugs, juvenile delinquency and the potential of school absenteeism. Memory is a very important characteristic of every nation’s culture, a common ground, connecting people and generations, a precious asset for each individual, a value that can be transferred. Memory boxes are used as a way to start a journey to each one of our learners’ lives. Through this journey we aim to improve self- knowledge, self-consciousness and self-awareness of senior citizens and youth.

We use people’s memories as a medium of activating them, narrating their life stories, remember important moments, communicate and also get to know themselves and each other, travel through their memories and exchange experience 1st group: 15 Seniors (+50) 2nd group: 15 Youngsters We work with the two groups separately and at the end of the project we join the groups Contents of the memory boxes in objects about origin, childhood, first school years, teenagers, student years … These objects can be anything of seniors' life, fitting in a box, so as to be the material witness of the people’s lives. Each one of our learners is going to create their own memory box, which will narrate a story, seniors’ life stories not CVs. The youngsters teach the seniors ICT skills, Art and dances Seniors and young groups meet separately in certain time creating memory boxes as a means of communication The story of each person placed on a context of the two dimensions: time and place and these stories can be very different, also very similar A representation of the memory boxes (photographic or physical) travel to European partners in an exhibition

The "ReaGe" Grundtvig project, with partners from different areas of Europe, addresses senior citizens (+5),socially excluded people, cooperating closely with youngsters, so that both generations will interact and learn from each other, because inter-generational learning offers advantages to all generations.
The projects aims at creating new learning opportunities for young and senior citizens, who present to the youngsters their life stories, encouraging them to cherish their experiences through the memory boxes, which form a portable exhibition, traveling to all partners countries.

Intergeneration learning pathways via memory boxes for seniors and youngsters with volunteering

Please describe if and how your stakeholders (cooperation partners, funders, users, etc.) have been participating in defining the problem and developing the solution.

Our partners from Slovenia, UK, Netherlands, Romania and Poland are cooperating with us closely to the success of the project. The Romanians, the Slovenians and the Polish have also created memory boxes with the contribution of the seniors,while the Dutch have implemented in another way the memory wisdom of the seniors. So the Dutch partner "BLandelijk Expertise Informatiecentrum Duaal Onderwijs (Leido)" uses the wisdom- expertise of the senior professors of Amsterdam university students to transfer it to students counseling them in their carrier.

Has your solution been tested in trials, experimentations, or pilot projects? If yes, please describe the process and outcome.

Yes, our project has been implemented in the European project LLP Grundtvig, Partnerships, cooperating with 6 other European partners and we have already tested the contribution of the memory boxes in local and European level with great success and enthusiasm on behalf of the citizens.

Seniors and youngsters are involved in each project phase and they will have acquired social skills, competencies useful for them in our society, participating in various activities in Art, in workshops concerning learning basic foreign languages, in the portal, creating memory boxes and creating the exhibition.
By being part of a group and feeling a person worthwhile expressing themselves in local level and in European level, the older people have set the first step to combat loneliness, to be social and to obtain ICT skills in order to communicate.
The outcome of the youngsters receive from the senior citizens the affection and warmth that is often lacking in the modern family or parent’s busy or absent. they will become active future European citizens.

What barriers might hinder the success of your initiative? How do you plan to overcome them?

We have the target group, both seniors and youngsters, in close cooperation,in enthusiasm and in good will, working both in a volunteer basis. The volunteerism of our learners is our weapon to struggle against all difficulties and obstacles. We also have the assistance of the local Municipality of Patars', especially the Vice Major of NGOS .
The only barrier is that funding is not enough for all of our volunteers to travel to participating countries. We plan to overcome this obstacle by our own funding, even if we contribute a lot to the success of this project, because we strongly believe in this and support it. we all work volunteerly, contribute personal work and time and we do claim the projects' success !

What are the specific professional backgrounds and competencies your team brings to the initiative?

Our educators team consists of high qualified teachers in languages, skilled educators in Art, Jewellery, I.C.T and counseling social workers.
University diploma in Greek language & philosophy.
Most of them have post graduate studies:
Greek language teacher with post graduate studies degree in culture and Art, in linguistics and in Adult education,
ICT expert with Doctors degree,
Geologist with masters degree in environmental studies,
social worker in counseling,
primary teacher in Pedagogic,
language teacher in Spanish language.

The manager and Coordinator of this initiative is Kyriaki Vamvaka- Christodoulopoulou from Patras, Greece. She holds a university diploma in English language and also has post graduate studies in Adult education.
She speaks fluently English and German and Italian and French (A2).
She is one of the Greek experts in the English language Portfolio (ELP), nominated by the Greek Ministry of Education.
Mrs Vamvaka is a European projects manager expert since 1998,as she was coordinator of the European projects for 8 years in the Directorate of secondary Education schools in Achaia region.

Target group, scale and impact
Which target group(s) do you want to reach with your solution?

We target two age groups, already formed:
A) The seniors' group (+50 age), especially women. Their education background: all are University diploma holders in Greek language, in Chemistry with a Doctors degree, in Art , a Midwife. All of them are pensioned.
Still working women: one university Professor with post graduates in theater,one ICT currently working teacher with a Doctors degree and English language teacher.
B) unemployed youngsters group mostly women( 20- 35 years old), as Greek language teachers, social workers, primary teachers.
