Concise Summary: Help us pitch this solution! Provide an explanation within 3-4 short sentences.

The centre would aim at opening to partially or not self-sufficient people, as well as to inter-culture and inter-generation relationships.

About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

The so called “Enrico Giusti” social community centre is a social (not health-care) facility where admission is free. The center is for all Pianoro’s self-sufficient over 65 years elderly who would like to share their spare time with other people by doing different types of activities. It is an excellent local asset whose main goals are expanding the services offered to people in order to sustain their stay at home (instead of sending them into nursing homes), providing the chance of socializing, sharing and actively taking part to any activities in a protected environment full of stimulus and proposals. Indeed, as to not self-sufficient person, his/her home very often becomes an “isle” where individual lives a sort of strict “symbiosis” relationships with the carer subject. The loss of stimulus and self-confidence, the loneliness, not being active any longer, may cause marginalization and isolation both for the individual and the carer person. The project aims at overcoming isolation, including not self-sufficient people who require an additional socio health-care operator.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

Pianoro is a town where rural and mountain traditions are still very settled.Until the end of the second world war, the social culture and structure were established on the family and its economy. That’s why we have thought to get back traditions and gastronomic know-how from our elderly people. We think that the production of fresh typical pasta like “tagliatelle”(noodles),“tortellini”(stuffed pasta),“strichetti” is an excellent means to awaken the interest and the attention towards both oneself and the group to begin a pleasant routine. The pasta handling and the use of old tools can bring back old memories, emotions and feelings which were just asleep. The project’d like to maintain and train the remaining cognitive and psychophysical capacities:I’is especially by training the elderly’s abilities that the joy of life can be awaken.Since it’s a manual and collective activity, it leaves room for any kind of socialization relationships, you can talk, sing...The presence of a social health-care operator would grant additional help so that everyone, self and not self-sufficient people, can become an actor and a leading actor by teaching all children and women of any nationality. Twice a week, elderly, young, women and everyone who may be interested in the workshop, each wearing his/her own kitchen apron (to preserve one’s personality), will knead and roll-out pasta to create those little culinary masterpieces Emilia Romagna region is so proud of.The pasta so obtained will be dryed and cooked for a collective lunch offered to all the citizens once a week. The project would then require a social health-care operator who is not available in the structure currently.Such operator would go twice/week taking care of upto 5 not suff people
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

Mrs. Gianna, 68, widow, lives in Pianoro with her son. She’s 100% disabled, she can hardly walk and can only move thanks to the use of aid devices. Her son is a worker and he is not at home most of the day. He comes back towards mid afternoon. The relationship between mother and son is based on conflict. Due to isolation and loneliness, the woman tends to self-pity and tries ways to draw her son’s attention who, on his turn, badly stands for this. The consequence is that the tension between the two subjects is more and more increasing. The assistance of a social health-care operator who may take the woman to the community centre during the afternoon may foster different solutions: activating motivation and arrangements to go out; not waiting for her son arrival with anxiety;fostering the relationship by settling in a group; doing something well known all together;becoming the workshop masters being the holders of knowledge and expertise;taking an active role in the workshop and getting in touch with different people, have the selfconfidence increased, having a goal (the monthly lunch).

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

The local social care system tries to provide answers to self or not self-sufficient elderly by giving care in their life context which, however, doesn’t meet the individual’s relationship needs towards “what is out of their homes”. Or partially or fully not self- sufficient elderly are sent to semi-residential centres where they can get assistance during daytime hours. The different and acute diseases elderly suffer from make it very difficult to grant the best answer to everyone for their socialization and active involvement. For those who are still self-sufficient it isn’t easy nor exciting getting in relationship with those who are suffering from chronic, degenartive serious deseases. Last chance is the admission to nursing homes which are well organised from the social and health-care point of view but often lead to isolation and closure. The project which is being submitted is a gate towards the world and the people leading to socialization. The individual can stay at home,at his own home, which is not an exclusion place any longer but a platform towards the other people.

In Pianoro which is a small town Pianoro at the foot of the Apennines between Emilia and Tuscany regions, 5 kms far from Bologna

What is the impact on your target group (users, clients) you want to generate?

Thanks to a minivan equipped on purpose, twice a week we will pick older people up from their homes (the ones identified by the social care services) and will take them to the Giusti centre.Today the Giusti centre's a social and not health-care point, that's why it current doesn’t have any skilled health-care personnel but a social entertainer lady.In the future, this feature would be overcome. In fact, the partially not-sufficient people will be able to attend the centre and the other subjects involved,The Municipality, thanks to the increased funds, will answer the rising demand from citizens.

What is the wider impact on society you want to generate?

see above

We are creating a strong community which need to te enriched by the partially or full not-sufficient people.
