About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Early diagnosis of melanoma cancer. Melanoma is one of the most common skill cancer and with an increasing presence between the west population. However the disease can be easily diagnosticated with optical inspection.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

We have prototyped a cloud computing technology to enable medical inspections in a spread metropolitan environment. The solution uses affordable and portable video dermatoscope to collect neo images. A proprietary cloud computing technology, named "Vitaever", has been used to share data between different doctors and to monito the screening program evolution.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

With Vitaever helps to develop large scale screening programs involving thousands patients distributed over the whole country. With Vitaever it is possible to coordinate several doctors, to share data and to analyze the program progress. That helps not only on the coordination side but anso to develop sophisticated analysis of the desease impact over the territory.
Sustainability

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

In italy we are moving on the new field of cloud-compunting techncologies appplied to personal and home health-care (www.vitaever.com). That's why we have no direct competitors, by now. Our business model (pricing, tehncologies) it's completely different from the others. Of course, we are moving forward in order to make the gap bigger and bigger, adding new features to our service, thanks also to the contribution of our clients.
Team

Founding Story

We have started in 2009 with cloud computing in particular to help the development of home healthcare. Later we have realized thjat this king of web based approach could used to deveop early screening diseases programs to be offered where people spend a lort of time and the work place or places the they use to visit as a pharmacy or a square. With this approach the screening goes where is the patient - while usually the opposite happens. So we have biuild a pilot program to support the ANT foundation (www-ant.it one of the largest cancer caring organizations in EU) in developing a melanoma screenig project.

Social Impact
Please describe the goal of your initiative; outline what you are trying to achieve

We have tried to develop a easy to use web interface to plug affordable diagnostic devices and implement diseases programs in large area, in particularly in rural areas

What has been the impact of your solution to date?

Supporting the ANT from 2009 to 2011 we have helped to provide about 35k visits. Of these, at 10% of patients was suggested a second visit for probable presence of the disease.

What is your projected impact over the next five years?

We have started an exciting R&D program to use low cost devices on our platform - 90% less expensive of the present device. We will combine the iPhone computation power with low cost professional optics. We belove that this approact combined with a training will allow us to design screening program with reduced budget and involving less doctors but more nurses.

What barriers might hinder the success of your project? How do you plan to overcome them?

As we said we are working on providing low cost professional devices to enable very large scale programs with reduced budget. This approach will be even more winning in under development countries where there are very low economical resources for health and often the population is spread on a large rural area.

Winning entries present a strong plan for how they will achieve and track growth. Identify your six-month milestone for growing your impact

Develop technology blocks for plug-and-play low cost diagnostic devices on the Vitaever cloud computing

Identify three major tasks you will have to complete to reach your six-month milestone
Task 1

Complete the state of art analisys

Task 2

Develop a procedure for directly acquire an immage from an iPhone camera equipped with a professional optics

Task 3

Develop a module on the Vitaever Cloud for storing images and to tract the body position from where the photo was taken

Now think bigger! Identify your 12-month impact milestone

Develop a training program and a procedure for running screening programs with nurses and a reduced number of doctors

Identify three major tasks you will have to complete to reach your 12-month milestone
Task 1

Develop the training program

Task 2

Develop a software module for supporting a small number of doctors to review the pictures of neos collected by the nurses

Task 3

Demonstrate that this approach works

Today, after a two year work, ANT Hospital, a complex distributed system, is powered by Vitaever technologies and proves how to overcome issues such us communication limits, data and knowledge sharing, people and resources scheduling, assets tracking, displacements optimization and offering the same care benefit and efficiency of a traditional one-site hospital. This effort was been awarded in 2011 by EU commission as one of ten example of social innovation.
