Mobi Drugs is a mobile based service that provides critical drug information to health care workers and the general public when required.

About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Access to health services, qualified healthcare staff and medicines are the core components of any healthcare system. Of these 3 components, medicines are of special importance for various reasons: they save lives, improve health, promote trust and participation in health services, they, however can be fatal if used wrongly. Communities, quite understandably, equate the quality of healthcare primarily with the availability of basic essential medicines. The National Drug Authority (NDA) in Uganda is at the forefront of creating awareness about the safe and proper use of medicines / drugs with themes like “Safe Drugs Save Lives” or “Drug Information, a Public Good”. There is need to complement existing services by providng information on medicines i.e. dosages, side effects, etc.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

Mobi Drugs is a mobile based service that provides critical drug information to health care workers and the general public when required. Accurate drug information is obtained by texting in natural language queries via the short messaging service (SMS) or by use of the Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) mechanism. Its main objective is to ensure the safe, proper and appropriate use of human and veterinary medicines. Mobi – Drugs is an intelligent service that provides critical drug information through natural language queries via SMS and USSD. A user will be able to obtain information on drug side effects, indications, contraindications, dosages, mechanism of action, onset of action, duration of action, and interactions with other drugs. A user will also be able to obtain information on what to do in case of an overdose, a missed dose or other complication.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

Self prescription is a common occurence in developing countries with Pharmacies not minding about who they sell the drugs to; whether they have the right prescription or not, etc. Often times we have little or no information about certain drugs we commonly use e.g. their side effects, do and don'ts about a drug, etc. The Mobi-Drugs service can provide this necessary information to whoever is looking in a friendly and easily understood manner.
Sustainability

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

The National Drug Authority (NDA) in Uganda is at the forefront of creating awareness about the safe and proper use of medicines / drugs with themes like “Safe Drugs Save Lives” or “Drug Information, a Public Good”. Several methods and channels of communication are being used for drug awareness campaigns. They include: the print media (newspapers), broadcast media (televisions and radios), and use of mobile text messages (SMS). However, the current services mostly concentrate on regulary issues associated with medicines and don't really address the need of drug information.
