Elevator Pitch

Concise Summary: Help us pitch this solution! Provide an explanation within 3-4 short sentences.

Bounce Works is a social enterprise that creates connected products to help kids thrive. Apart of Me is our most exciting project, using interactive game design to create a safe digital space for children when someone they love is dying.

WHAT IF - Inspiration: Write one sentence that describes a way that your project dares to ask, "WHAT IF?"

What if the power of digital technology could be harnessed to enhance children's emotional wellbeing, thereby reducing the increasing burden of psychological suffering amongst our future generations?
About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

A child loses a parent every 22 minutes in the UK. When a parent dies from a terminal illness, this is particularly stressful for children whose needs are often ignored in these times. We know that children who don't have the necessary support will disproportionately suffer from negative outcomes including depression, self-harm and criminal behaviour.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

Apart of Me has been designed with this in mind, it combines the immersive, compelling digital experience of a game with the therapeutic insights gained from years of work with children and families. The app has three key functions; firstly, it provides a way to facilitate the difficult conversations the child may have with their loved one and also with their teachers and peers. Secondly it provides a way to curate digital memories of their loved one (photos, videos and audio recordings), this provides the children with a secure, reliable single-purpose store of the media they chose to remember their loved one by. Finally, the app provides access to helpful practical information and advice about all aspects of terminal illness.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

One young boy we have worked with during the first design phases was aged 14 when his father was diagnosed with cancer. Because he did not have access to counselling, and because his family did not know themselves how to deal with this difficult situation, he felt totally alone and his life went off track. He was excluded from school, fell into negative behaviours, lost his confidence and gave up all the activities he used to love doing. Whilst there is no preventing the deep sadness that naturally accompanies a parent dying, it is possible with the right resource to prevent the starker consequences of watching your parent die. Apart of Me will provide a space where children can feel supported, and not lose themselves.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

So far we have been working with a range of families who have been through this process and come out the other side. Already, the children and families have told us how empowered they feel being able to reflect on their experience and working out a way to give something back in this interactive digital platform.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

Apart of Me is the most exciting project of Bounce Works. Once we have successfully launched this solution, we will then look forward to building other tools in this space. We have been working on a connected toy for children and families that will build emotional resilience. With the already predicted success of Apart of Me, we are confident we will be able to build more effective, popular tools in this space, and build a reputation for ourselves through different providers (education, healthcare, families, children).
Sustainability

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

Apart of Me will be made available free of charge. We will then offer a white label version of the software to specific organisations and charities and will use similar techniques to expand our product portfolio to cover a wider range of situations. We plan on becoming the first port of call for any organisation which is looking to develop games, apps or therapies which promote emotional wellbeing.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

http://www.childbereavementuk.org/support/our-app/ A basic attempt to make an app helpful to bereaved young people. Unlike our app it doesn't offer an immersive digital environment, a place to record and store memories or any sort of pre-bereavement support. We asked our focus group their thoughts about this app, and the children and young people said unanimously that they would never use something like this, unless it had an interactive game element to it. http://www.thatdragoncancer.com/#home A simple narrative game app which talks about cancer.

Founding Story

Bounce works is a social enterprise founded by Louis Weinstock, child psychotherapist, and Ben Page, professional software developer. Louis set up a partnership between Headspace and a charity he was working for, and it was during this time he realised the urgent need to develop digital tools to support children's emotional resilience. Louis met Ben's wife, a Child Psychologist, on a training event and she introduced Ben to Louis. We realised as we talked that our combination of skills was highly unique and that we could create some products that would really make a big difference in kids lives.

Team

Louis Weinstock is a child psychotherapist, mindfulness teacher, and innovator. With extensive therapeutic experience with children and young people, he has consulted on several digital projects, including Headspace, who consulted him to develop their mindfulness for kids app. Ben Page is a professional software developer with 17 years’ experience working in startups, government and financial institutions. He has designed, built and launched multiple products from simple apps to complex distributed applications handling millions of pounds worth of financial transactions. As we grow, we want to bring on board somebody with marketing experience, and we are clear we will need people with graphic design, animation, and product design skills for future projects. For Apart of Me, we have been lucky to have been working with a games company Playerthree, who have been supporting us pro bono up until this point.
CO-CREATION IDEA: Please offer a brief description of how you imagine a win-win partnership with Boehringer Ingelheim to better serve unmet needs in health. (Hint: Please mention the underlying business model envisioned that would make such a partnership sustainable.)

We see our product, Apart of Me, as the proof of concept for an entirely new category of treatment, an "emotional wellbeing digital intervention". Creating Apart of Me is allowing us to help young people at one of the hardest and most destabilising periods of their lives. We plan on taking the knowledge we are gaining from developing our product and applying it to a range of situations, both clinical and non-clinical, where a child's emotional resilience is under threat. Working with Boehringer Ingelheim will multiply the impact of our efforts many times over by matching our specific domain expertise and passion with their vast market knowledge and access and the respect that the Boehringer Ingelheim name carries with it.

NEEDS: Based on you response above, please specify which of the following resources, operations or expertise by Boehringer Ingelheim you imagine leveraging to actualize the proposed co-creation opportunity. Please check all that apply. (Hint: while financing is often critical to scale, we are also interested in understanding what other assets or expertise could be leveraged).

Distribution Channels, Research and Development, Relationships/New Contacts, Manufacturing, Marketing/Communications Support, Human Resources, Legal Support, Public Policy Knowledge, Access to Capital.

EXPLANATION OF NEEDS: Please explain your choices in more detail.

Although we are currently developing a specific solution to a specific problem, we believe that the techniques we are discovering will be applicable to a range of similar situations. In order to apply our techniques in other areas we will need the help of a large organisation with access to "the bigger picture". We anticipate that Boehringer Ingelheim will be able to open the door to key decision makers within large healthcare providers who will be able to guide the future direction of our product development and point out areas of chronic unmet need in the area of emotional health.

OFFER: What are the main assets you may contribute in a co-creation partnership with Boehringer Ingelheim that would better serve unmet needs in health?

Deep understanding of an unmet need in a specific market/context, Access to and established trust with customers/beneficiaries, Insights into behavior change.

FOCUS AREAS: Which of the following best describes the main focus of your project? (select all that apply)

Improving the affordability of healthcare (e.g., microinsurance, reducing the economic cost of care), Remote care solutions for health management, treatment, and diagnosis, Packaging of health products and services to address needs currently unmet.
