About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

80% of the philantropic hospitals in Brazil operate on deficit, having to constantly fight to pay their debts, while they treat the patients for free. Some of them end up closing doors, while others have to reduce the number of patients to keep existing.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

To work around this problem, we aim to develop a management model designed to improve fundraising through unconventional means, giving the hospitals the financial foundation they need to improve patient care and treat more patients, empowering these organizations. We will work with business process mapping to reduce rework and increase productivity, alternative fundraising methods to increase income and branding of the hospital, looking to create a identity within the community the hospital is in, bringing more supporters, partners and volunteers. The focus will be worker and patient humanizing, aiming to make the hospital a more humane place to be and to work at.

The solution we designed will give the philantropic hospitals the money and attention they require to keep treating their patients for free. Not also we aim to reduce the number of philantropic hospitals on deficit, we are working to reinvent the way these hospitals are managed and really empower them with the means they need to run this model, including personal and professional capacitation of workers, solar energy implantation, appropriate tools to control the cash flow and a strong identity for the hospital to be able to negotiate with potential partners and attract donors. Improving the financial aspects of the philantropic hospitals is just our first step towards a deep humanization of the hospitals on Brazil.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

HospitaLAR has recently started to work on one philantropic hospital, Cantinho do Céu, a hospital which houses patients that have multiple disabilities and require chronic treatment. They now house 36 patients and treat 15 more through the day hours, and are in a pretty difficult financial situation, in which they could even house more patients, but can't because of money issues. Our goal is to build the hospital management model merging our knowledge and their experience, giving them the ways and means to treat all the patients in the region in the best possible way, and then using this model we built to replicate our knowledge and experience to other hospitals, bringing our project to them and customizing the model for each individual hospital, to also give them the ways and means to treat more and better.

We intend to replicate the project on philantropic hospitals around the whole country, being it our own team's proposition or the hospitals' demand. We can create other teams, extensions or even teach our method to other teams and hospitals in order to enable them to empower more hospitals.

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

Association of the event partners with the social cause and the identity we will brand and strenghten for the hospital, in order to make these partnerships more viable. Creation of a events calendar with a heavy divulgation of the events, through partner medias like local TV and radio channels and social media and focusing the best usage of the resources the hospital partner's and donors provide.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

Many projects adress some subjects we also adress, like hospital management, humanization, branding, fundraising and better treatment, but none of them adresses them all. We aim to develop a full-scale management model, including all important aspects to the philantropic hospitals. We are putting together professionals from multiple areas of knowledge to, in cooperation, design the best ways of dealing with the problems the philantropic hospitals deal with every day.

Founding Story

Hospital de Retaguarda Cantinho do Céu has a serious financial problems, which could cause them to close their doors. This caught Enactus FEA-RP/USP team's attention and brought us to realize the precarious situation in which our philantropic hospitals have been left. The project started as a way to help Cantinho do Céu to survive, but we eventualy realized what we are building is a model so complete that it can and should be adapted and used in many philantropic hospitals around the whole country.


HospitaLAR is composed of 3 proud members: Nícolas Borba, co-founder and team leader, coursing business management; Julia Papa, co-founder and team coordinator, coursing enterprise economics and controllership and Pâmella Rezende, co-founder and team coordinator, coursing enterprise economics, all of us members of Enactus and studying in FEA-RP/University of São Paulo.

To design this management model, we need a deep web of knowledge, researching and networking, aside from the usual financial support and donation of medicine, and in those aspects Boehringer Ingelheim could help us greatly. Our project will affect philantropic hospitals around the whole country and strenghten their identity, among others, through branding and divulgation. Boehringer Ingelheim could be in these divulgations, listed as our trusted partner on our journey to change the Brazilian philantropic hospitals' reality.

As stated above, we will count on Boehringer Ingelheim for their extensive researching and development capabilities, using theses researches to give foundation to the theories we use to design the model. Adittionaly, we are sure Boehringer Ingelheim could provide us with some great new contacts in the health area, helping us get different points of view from experts. If appliable, Boehringer Ingelheim could also provide some specific expensive medicine used for the treatment of the hospitals in which we plan to act, and provide financial assistance for expensive treatments.
