About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Preventive healthcare is really complex and expensive, where an individual has to undergo a series of costly tests when he/she does not even have a disease. As a result of that people keep delaying their health check-up until they face a first major scare. At that point chronic diseases like diabetes, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, etc. have already created an irreversible damage and lead to high cost of care.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

We have developed an online platform where an individual can take a 5-minute online assessment to answer simple health related questions. Based on these answers our algorithms will identify a person’s health risks and create a personalized check-up plan, list of tests and required doctor consultations. The algorithm has been clinically validated and has proven to save up to 80% costs on health check-up. Once the person takes the tests, the algorithms will keep generating targeted health advice, and timely follow-on reminders to ensure that people stay on top of their health risks.

Impact: How does it Work

We had launched a preventive health check-up program for a small organization with 200 employees with an average age of 27 years. We were able to identify >50 individuals who were either pre-diabetics, pre-hypertensives, had sleep disorders, migraine or some other health issue which as at an early stage and was going untreated. We were able to guide each individual to get tested early and also consider a series of targeted lifestyle changes to help them reduce their long-term risk of chronic diseases. We were also able to develop a company level health engagement plan for the organization, to be able to spend their efforts in a more targeted manner.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

In last two months post our launch, we have been able to perform a free health-assessment for more than 2,000 individuals. We were able to identify >500 pre-diabetics, pre-hypertensives, people who had sleep disorders, suffered from migraine, allergies or some other health issue which were at an early stage and were going unattended. We were able to guide these individuals to consult a doctor, or go to a diagnostic facility for a follow-on test, to be able to rule out their health-risks or start seeking help. We have now started collaborating with diagnostic labs and other providers to be able to actually provide these services to individuals in a more accessible fashion at their door-step. We are noting the results of these tests, and will keep engaging with these people in an ongoing manner.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

We believe that this platform can be scaled to multiple countries across geographies, through insurers, diagnostics chains, hospitals, etc. depending on the healthcare payment models, to help people start early on their preventive health journey. It will create a large cost impact on the healthcare system by helping diagnose people early and thus start engaging them around lifestyle changes, treatment, follow-ups, etc. in a highly targeted manner. This could potentially save millions of dollars in healthcare costs for each country by deploying targeted preventive health measures.
Sustainability

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

Currently the project is run on a personal investment, but the idea to get it to a financial sustainability by: (a) Getting it funded by the healthcare providers (e.g., diagnostic labs) in the shorter run who get access to more patients through this platform, and (b) in the longer run demonstrate value in terms of cost saved and hence get in a value-based billing model with the insurers

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

Currently there are multiple health risk assessment / screening tools trying to address the same problem in the market place e.g., American Health Association, American Diabetic Association, Real-Age, etc. have either disease specific or some way of creating target screening recommendations. However, there platforms are either narrow in terms of disease focus, and also do not have ability to fulfill the preventive health needs. Diagnostic Labs & a few Insurance companies also encourage preventive health check-up, but do not recommend personalized check-up plans. A few start-ups in India have recently entered this domain e.g., Health Vektors, Healthians

Founding Story

Dr. Purav Gandhi went for a preventive health check-up and realized that he had borderline hypertension at the young-age of 29 years. When he started looking around amongst friends and colleagues, he realized that he was not the only one, but a lot of similar folks had been living with a great risk of chronic diseases, and has been just delaying the check-up for various reasons. He saw this is as an opportunity to make an impact, and help people like himself take charge of their health at an early stage, and decided to develop a scalable platform for the same.

Dr. Purav Gandhi (CEO) is responsible for developing the clinical algorithms, scalable business model, and identifying collaboration partners. Karan (Product Manager) and Prakash (CTO) lead design and development of the platform, and Sandeep leads marketing. Boehringer Ingelheim will have an opportunity to (a) co-create impact by identifying people with a risk of various diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, thyroid disorders, at risk of heart diseases, etc., and (b) have an opportunity to directly engage with these patients to provide them treatment in the form of medications, consultations, lifestyle management, etc.

Also, we as a platform collect data from patients at various points including lifestyle data, medical history, family history, results from diagnostic tests, and plan to collect mobile and social media data as well for individuals. As a result, Boehringer Ingelheim will have an opportunity to engage in various clinical and market intelligence type of studies to inform various business and scientific decisions.
