Project Summary
Elevator Pitch

Concise Summary: Help us pitch this solution! Provide an explanation within 3-4 short sentences.

My initiative Mama Care seeks to reduce mortality of mothers and children through preventive means of promoting access to antenatal services by the slum dwellers and the rural poor and teaching low level health workers use of simple tools to detect malnutrition in mothers and children.

WHAT IF - Inspiration: Write one sentence that describes a way that your project dares to ask, "WHAT IF?"

What if low level health workers (village health teams) can be used to reduce maternal and child mortality by teaching them the use of simple tools to detect malnutrition and also improve access to immunisation and antenatal services.
About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

The project is trying to address maternal and child mortality

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

Employing low level health workers like nursing assistants, village health teams how to use simple assessment tools like mid-upper arm circumference, ,height for age, weight for age to detect malnutrition in mothers and children and also work as change agents to improve access to antenatal care and immunization.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

So far we I have been able to teach a few members of the village health teams, nursing assistants in the rural areas and they have been very receptive, they can now use the mid-upper arm circumference tape in assessing malnutrition, they can interpret the cut offs, dissenting information on the relevancy of antenatal care and immunization and as per now their health prospects have been improved.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

Lives of the mothers and children in the urban slums and the rural poor have been impacted and the turn for antenatal and immunization has gone up, though the malnutrition cases reaching the referral hospitals are also declining due to the early detection. As of now since 2013 the lives of 300 and 100 children have been impacted, the number would have been higher than that if the resources were not limited.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

As an initiative we intend to work with more partners like the Rotary foundation ,UNICEF,the government and very many other stake holders in the health sector such that we increase our coverage and impact. Increasing capital and human resource is also paramount.
Sustainability

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

We intend to receive donations from very many well wishers and partners like the Rotary foundation, UNICEF, the government of the republic of Uganda, volunteer subscription fee among others. we also intend to work with external professional auditors and project managers to check our work, monitor and evaluate our works and also hold us accountable for all the activities.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

There other actors in the area for example the local government though no organization has gone little a long way to include low level health workers like those on the village health team to detect malnutrition using these simple tools.
Team

Founding Story

By working in Hoima regional referral Hospital Western Uganda in 2013 as an intern student clinical officer, I came to realize that children admitted with cases of malnutrition and mothers dieing as result of complications arising from not attending antenatal care was alarming, and the situation is the same in all hospitals all over Uganda, plus my miserable childhood experience of growing up in an impoverished community ignited my desire to take initiative.

Team

The team I work with is diverse, from different walks of life, that is IT experts are on the board, social workers, health workers among others.
