About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

In many villages only high & middle income households have access to house tap. They access water supply container by fixing long plastic hoses to their houses. The piping network is very chaotic (often named noodle hose) and cause high volume of wasted water. Low income group have no access, and the capacity of the water management group (if any) is weak that the water supply services is not sustainable. and its community cannot get benefit.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

Integrated upstream and downstream solution: Upstream: Organization and area management area to protect water sources and springs by reforestation and social forestry. Downstream: develop efficient water supply system, establish a strong water supply management. In addition, building the dialogue between upstream and downstream and developing a mechanism that will benefit both sides, e.g. development of micro finance. Water supply management & services can be used as an entry point towards income generation, nutrition improvement, and village self-reliance in provision of fund towards sustainable rural development. The key to success lies on effective facilitation to empower village community to be self-reliant.
Impact: How does it Work

Efficient system decrease water loss, thus more households in the community can get the benefits from the services. Overflow of water can be used for irrigation. The impact will be increased income for the households, better health and nutrition, better household sanitation facilities and environmental health, and can also provide employment opportunities especially for young people in the village. Strong Water Management Organization with a good technical know how and management is a must for water supply system and services to be well maintained and sustainable. Profit from water service can be a source of income of the village to support any social activities such as scholarship, health services, and for village development.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

Villages that are facilitated using this approach and strategy has got the benefits and impact such as the increasing amount of agricultural crops due to water availability, increased affordability to technology such as motor bike, emerging households industries, faster access to health services as transport is available especially for emergencies, women can save time from fetching water for more productive activities. In addition school children can attend classes and come on time because they are healthier due to access to clean and safe water, a more harmonious social environment as there is no or less conflict on access to clean water.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

Develop a number of sites that can be thoroughly and completely facilitated to create a model on developing self-reliant village with clean water supply services as the “entry point”. To build public opinion through mass media both printed and electronic on the specific strategy and concept on how to facilitate a self-reliant community in managing their clean water supply system and services, and to advocate the central, Province and district government to support with related policy and regulation that support sustainable and self-reliant village development.

The methodology develop to sustain the system and services are: 1. Water is not free – community should pay based on the amount of use (using wter meter) and there is a tariff system applied. 2. The Water Management Group should have good managerial and technical capacities to provide reliable services on clean water

National and districts government, national and international NGOs working on clean water supply projects; YMP offers different approach and strategy. 1. Not confronting existing system 2. Team

Founding Story

In 2009 YMP started to realize that problems in the village should not be seen separately but by looking into its complexity and should manage it comprehensively and inintegrated manner. Also that community as potential not a helpless group with problems. Integrated and comprehensive clean water supply management has been a test and evaluation to various other approaches that “are claimed” as participative. It proves that with appropriate approach and facilitation community can develop their self-reliance, issues and problems can be analyzed and solved, initiative and participation can easily develop within themselves.

At present YMP has 8 permanent staff and 47 village facilitators as volunteers. In addition to 4 part time managers and advisors. If there are more projects in new villages, YMP will recruit field staff or water supply specialist personnel to support the implementation of the project or program.
