Dear Changemakers Community,

Of all the advances to look forward to in the 21st century, none may be more critical – and more promising – than those in the field of health. Never before have innovations in human networks, technology, and science been so poised to converge for the improved health of all the world’s citizens.

The Making More Health competition, launched by Ashoka Changemakers in partnership with Boehringer Ingelheim, seeks innovative models that are transforming the field of health to sustainably increase the well-being of individuals, families, and communities.

We welcome solutions and collaborations along the entire health continuum, from prevention and lifestyle, to detection and treatment. Eligible initiatives may target a wide variety of populations throughout the world and include (but are not limited to) those that:

  • Increase access to quality health services and treatment: Innovations may incorporate strategies such as addressing cultural and financial barriers, lack of transportation, decentralized medical resources, and gaps in education and knowledge.
Solutions may include initiatives for disease prevention and diagnosis, developing healthy lifestyles, or advocacy and awareness programs relevant to any life stage.
  • Empower individuals, families, and communities to address local health issues: Innovations may engage and inform individuals, families, and communities, and allow them to directly participate in the management of their own health. These span a range of solutions from communal patient care initiatives to programs that nurture a culture of health within communities.
  • Target vulnerable and underserved populations: Entries may include those that address conflict and/or post-crisis environments, poverty and development as related to health, mental health, or rural health.

The potential to accelerate progress in the field of health is enormous. Help individuals, families, and communities achieve good health by submitting or nominating a solution today.

Competition Guidelines

Making More Health: Achieving Individual, Family, and Community Well-being is open to all individuals (with the exception of prescribing physicians), teams, and organizations (charitable organizations, public or private entities). This global competition welcomes entries that:

  • Reflect the theme of the challenge: Making More Health: Achieving Individual, Family, and Community Well-being. The aim of the competition is to identify innovations that will shape the future of the health sector for the benefit of individuals, families and communities.
  • Have a proven success on some level, with the potential to scale; or indicate a path for growth beyond the conceptual stage and have already demonstrated impact and sustainability. Some innovations will achieve their impact quickly, while others will seed incremental, long-term change. While we support new ideas at every stage and encourage their entry, the judges are better able to evaluate programs that are beyond the conceptual stage and have demonstrated proof of impact.
  • Do not promote Boehringer Ingelheim or its products.
  • Are submitted in English, French, Spanish, or Portuguese.

Please complete the entire entry form and enter by September 21, 2011. All decisions of the judges will be final.

Assessment Criteria

Changemakers and Boehringer Ingelheim are interested in a variety of approaches that address the challenge of Making More Health. The winning entries will best meet the following criteria:

  • Innovation: This is the knock-out test—if the work is not innovative, the judges will not give it high rankings. The entry must describe the systemic, product, or policy innovation on which it is focused. The innovation should be a unique model of change that demonstrates a substantial difference from other initiatives in the field, with the possibility for large-scale replication.
  • Making More Health especially seeks to identify solutions that go beyond, or improve upon, established health systems, and that reach individuals, families and communities previously left behind by such systems.
  • Social Impact: Initiatives should employ a comprehensive approach to addressing the root causes of problems within health. For example, the creation of an affordable medical device should be combined with outreach, dissemination, and uptake initiatives for maximum impact.

Some innovations will have proven success at a small level, while others may have engaged millions of people in communities around the world. Some solutions will achieve their impact quickly, while some will seed change for the long term.

  • Sustainability: For an innovation to be truly effective, it must have both a model of sustainable impact and a viable organization. Innovations will be judged on their long-term vision for increasing impact and creating lasting change.

Entries should describe not only how they are currently financing their work, but also how they plan to finance their work in the future. The most successful entrants go beyond discussing whether or not they will charge for services and describe a business plan. They should also demonstrate that they have strong partnerships and support networks to address an ongoing need, and to aid in scalability and the maintenance of a clear financial strategy.
