The city of Milan - Welfare, Social and health policies' Department and Italian Society of alcohol-related disorders present an action-research to operate selectively on citizens' protection from alcohol-related diseases. Prevention develops through awareness of alcohol damages on people health, so that they can learn to drink responsibly.
The main idea is that it's necessary to understand what people exactly think about alcohol to elaborate effective preventive and educational strategies.

The innovation is referred to the exhaustive comprehension of alcohol consume in order to prevent, inform and sensitize milanese citizens about alcohol-related diseases. Now, we don't know the real people's representations about alcohol and its consume increases year by year, especially in young people (binge drinking is an example). This research can improve preventive strategies.

Alcohol disorders and alcohol abuse are related to any economic conditions (poor and rich people), any cultural conditions (low profile and high profile in education), any age (young and old people) and both gender too. The great spread of the issues make necessary to understand how milanese citizens drink, and what they think and feel about alcohol.
There are many health organizations in Milan trying to take care and cure of alcohol disorders but prevention is very difficult because of unhealthy behaviour.

Share the story of the founder and what inspired the founder to start this project

This project born in order to prevent alcohol disorders, after years and years of experience in the field.
People need to be informed about the alcohol's risks and damages on health; young people drink a lot: in the future, we risk a lot of people with alcohol diseases.
The founder Dott. Rossin Raffaella is psychologist and psychotherapist, twenty years of experience in alcohol-related disorders. She's a SIA's councillor, and she manages the health task force for alcohol-related diseases.

The project is in its Pilot stage.
The idea is to understand how people drink and to detach people at risk in order to elaborate effective campaigns of information.
The success will be measured with statistical and health survey to understand the situations about alcohol related disorders and alcohol consumptions.
The general plan is to do a follow up after several years to understand changes.

public opinion survey: it explore citizens' knowledge and representations about the risks associated with the consumption of alcohol (with particular reference to alcohol related diseases).

Carry out a "follow up" (8 years) of the state of knowledge, perceptions and experiences of milanese people concerning the consumption of alcohol.

What barriers might hinder the success of your project and how do you plan to overcome them?

Disinformation about alcohol improves unhealthy behaviours, especially in young people. There are too many stereotypes about alcohol and its related disorders but there are also about a correct and healthy consumption. It's important to understand how people drink to educate them and prevent pathologies.

SIA is founded in Padova in 1979, thanks to a team of psychiatrists, doctors, psychologists, lawyers who thought that different specialistic points of view permit to deal with the complicated relation between Man and alcohol.
SIA improves researches about alcohol, tries to inform people,sustains the growth of an healthy culture.
SIA collaborates with local authorities and scientific organizations, private and public.
City of Milan's Administration provides tools and cooperates with local, regional and national authorities.
