Project Summary
Elevator Pitch

Concise Summary: Help us pitch this solution! Provide an explanation within 3-4 short sentences.

My vision is self reliant community that fully utilises the opportunities that come with being in the youthful and energetic stage of life.
This is through training the youth in how to utilise the locally available materials in an environmentally friendly manner

WHAT IF - Inspiration: Write one sentence that describes a way that your project dares to ask, "WHAT IF?"

My project seeks to create an eco system led development where development takes place alongside other living and non living things
About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

my solution seeks to address the problem of the unemployed youth who unknowingly have access to untapped resources in their communities and they instead resort to harmful practices to get rich quick

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

My solution addresses the problem of youth unemployment and destruction of the environment. The proposed solution is to train the youth in particular with skills on exploiting the environment in a sustainable way. The youth only look at white collar jobs as a means for survival. Those with a little education look at themselves as unproductive and those who try to become productive do it in a way that is harmful to the environment. Given that human survival is necessary and the youth make up more than 75% of the population in Uganda, engaging them to become productive while supporting the survival of the next generations is fruitful
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

Other interventions enrich individuals while destroying the environment. This indirectly creates unemployment because of the unsustainable resource use and yet the desire is to gainfully employ the youth. For example waste plastics, polythene are not considered as resources. Trees are also cut down uncontrollably and yet the items they seek to make can be got from papyrus that can be enabled to rejuvenate. Recycling waste can save the environment. By helping the youth to acquire skills in carpentry and handicrafts in an environmentally sustainable way, it indirectly creates employment in other sectors by supporting agriculture and survival of different fauna and flora.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

There is increased youth employment in my community as many youth are seen collecting waste paper, polyethene for sale because they are now regarded as resources. Others are directly involved in carpentry and crafts. One local authority observed that there is a reduced crime rate because my intervention has given life skills and consequently employment to many youths in his area. The skills that i train have also been taken up by a nearby vocational institute as skills for self reliance. Girls in particular can be seen engaging in carpentry and crafts. This trend was not there before because girls were only supposed to carry out non monetized housework
Sustainability

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

The sustainability plan is partly embeded in the project itself through encouraging sustainable resource use. Other sustainability plan is to engage the youth in creation of support groups that involve creation of a revolving credit fund. Also because unemployment and environmental destruction are a global concern, donors and well wishers will be contacted for support

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

Many formal and non formal institutions are carrying out these trainings. However little attention is being paid to environmental concerns. Thier success is measured on numbers and not the current and future impacts to society like future unemployment through improper use of resources and destruction to the environment unknowingly or selfishly. Other approaches propose success that precedes failure and yet success should be maintained by proper use of resources

Founding Story

One day, an advert was aired on the local radio about sponsorship in vocational skills for the youth. I was alarmed by the number of youths who turned up.Being among some of those who turned up i was able to interact with others. What i realised was that almost 75% were in agriculture and artisan work of some sort. The aim was simply producing as much as possible but no one talked about sustaining that production. At home we were already suffering from poor yields because of soil exhaustion and this implored me to start thinking further

It is true that an experienced carpenter can use his innovative ideas to beautify the home furniture, do wood craft at the required spaces, and provide ample storage areas in a tricky manner.
