About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Given the technological development, the multitude of multimedia attractions and of leisure time activities, reading has become an obsolete activity for children in nowadays society. In the same time, parents’ continuous focus on the daily activities and their lack of time lead to a transformation of the familial routines and changed the way families spend their leisure time.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

The Book Fair proposes a vast array of activities that respond to various children needs, interests and levels of development. Children and parents are invited to join us in a magic reading trip. Bringing together publishing houses, miniLibry offers to its visitors the possibility to choose and buy story books, encyclopedias, collections, school books and many others, taking advantage of the appreciable discounts offered by the exhibitors. We propose different activities: art workshops, theatric plays (performed by children under the guidance of professional actors and theater producers), storytelling and reading activities sustained by famous parents, and the possibility for children to exchange books that they already read.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

miniLibri has reached its 7th edition in the summer of 2013.Throughout the years, the event managed to achieve an important place within the Romanian scene for children educational activities and represents a long-expected annual event. Moreover, an important aspect of the Book Fair is that it sustains equality and the right to quality education for all children. We offered access to cultural activities for children coming from disadvantaged environments, while sustaining an early childhood education program ‘A good start in life’ through the investment of the money raised from the sponsors.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

The presence of some of the best rated Romanian book houses that are specialized in children books corroborated with the continuous growth in the number of visitors and the interest of other organizations in participating to the Book Fair are measures of the importance of miniLibri. We started the Book Fair with nine book houses in 2005 and managed to raise the number up to sixteen in 2013. In respect with the visitors, their number also raised throughout the years, from approximately 1000 to 4000 in the summer of 2013. Considering that one of the main objectives of the program is to raise funds that would be used in order to support early childhood education, throughout the years we managed to raise over 50 000 euros.
Sustainability

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

The sustainability plan for maintaining the event in Bucharest is to secure the existing partnerships with book houses, funding businesses, media and hosting institutions. If it comes to expanding the event in the big cities of Romania we must develop new partnerships at local level or expand existing ones to cover associated costs and other resources.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

Although in the last few years the marketplace for complementary education and leisure time activities for children has developed considerably in Romania, there are still limited programs and events that cover dramatic play, art, and even less on promoting the importance of reading. In this respect, miniLibri Book Fair has entered the marketplace assuring an integrated event that represents the answer for children and parents needs.
Team

Founding Story

As an NGO we started to promote the idea of early childhood education with focus on birth to three since 2000 in Romania. Given the little progress we made until 2005, our PR manager came with the idea of organizing a unique , " uninvented" event dedicated to families to focus public awareness on early childhood education. This is how miniLibri came to life and it was possible due to our initial partners " Ion Creanga" Children's Thatre in Bucharest who hosted the fair, its actors who promoted it, Pro Credit Bank which funded the PR campaign, the first 9 book houses which participated and the immense interest of the press. The press coverage at that time pointed not only the concept but the event which became a real success.
