About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Play is central to the cognitive, physical, social, and emotional well-being of children and youth. It offers an ideal opportunity for parents to engage fully with their children. However due to lack of unstructured time children have been playing less often. Other constraints like space, time ,limited peer groups, academic pressure, parental pressure, under managed resources ,safety concerns and violence has also limited future of play.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

We create and support play spaces in communities. It has been instrumental in decreasing household and community violence and has enabled children to explore and act for self and society. We create child centered play spaces and mentor and facilitate playgroups. Each play group looks in to • Decrease the incidence of violence and enhance the social and emotional skills among children • Build capacity through mentoring and training • Create awareness among parents and community members towards play We are working towards integrating broader objectives of peace, human rights, democratic decision making and sustainable development with local games and sports.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

We have been working with a group of 40 children and 10 parents at two slums in Mumbai. We play local games of different geographical locations inside a peace circle in front of the community. It has a direct influence on the community and had led to lower violence and greater cohesion among community members.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

So far we reached 40 children, 40 volunteers and 10 teachers, we have also reached indirectly 600 children and 25 more parents. We worked with a government school to introduce play in the curriculum. The workshops in science and play, life skills and games from different geographies have helped develop co operation, trust, problem solving among children. The changes at present can be seen like children beginning to be participants in making play spaces, teachers open to the idea of a play space in their schools, volunteers enthusiastic about playing and enriching play spaces. It also holds promise for creating self transformation journeys of all involved.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

Imagine of a neighborhood safe space to play, will it not have direct impact on children and the community at large ? Creating awareness for play and play spaces will itself increase impact in a way by having more such spaces. A physical space, a virtual resource centre and a network of friends for play can indirectly support all such play spaces. Later I dream of a play spaces in each locality with parents and children playing together.
Sustainability

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

We think of creating play groups which can generate funds and look after there play centres. However the initiative supports by training and knowledge through resource centres and online portal. The funds for these will be mobilized through grant ,donations and fund raising and products development that emerge from the services.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

At present organisations have focused mainly on education however Toy bank, meljol,Apni shala , Akansha foundation,Dream a Dream, OSCAR, Magic Bus are some of the organisations working in a similar space. Chabutra is about autonomy and play spaces mainly to promote unstructured time for children to learn which makes this initiative unique. Also the decision making and to have an impact on community through child leadership is also unique.
