About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

With more than 80% of mobile service users having two or more SIM cards, inferior inter-network mobile service delivery is a problem many people face on a day to day basis.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

Chura helps solve this issue using four services, namely 1. Switch airtime-allows the user to switch airtime between different mobile service providers. 2. Buy airtime-allows a user to purchase airtime from any service provider using any mobile money service. 3. Bulk airtime-which provides a platform for cooperates to distribute airtime to their employees regardless of their mobile service providers by just one click! 4. Airtime for cash-whereby the user can exchange their airtime for cash.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

The idea was developed when we realized most Kenyan mobile subscribers use different networks for different purposes. An example is a subscriber that has one line for calls, another for texts and another for the internet. We thought it would be convenient to be able to serve all these lines from a single point in a fast and efficient way. The airtime for cash service was created for users that had a lot of airtime, wanted to convert it to cash but had no avenue to do this. Additionally, at the time users who bought airtime erroneously from their mobile money account could not have the transaction reversed. Our service helped this.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

The product has been launched to enthusiastic reception by the market. In a span of 6 months, Chura has managed to acquire over 700 users with over 50% being repeat customers. Chura has processed 5000+ transactions and airtime worth 16,000 USD has passed through our system. We have also enhanced access to the product by releasing an SMS system hence making Chura available to all mobile users.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

We plan on rolling out our USSD platform to facilitate easy and free access to our services and also introduce a mobile app for the smart phone market for a better experience for our users. We are also looking to replicate our service in other Multi-SIM markets in the region. We are also on track to launch some new products.
Sustainability

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

Our revenue streams include -Usage fee for our services -Reselling airtime we acquire via the airtime for cash service Potential Revenue streams could be -An advertising platform through our SMS system -Licensing our technology

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

Retail airtime vendors are our main competitors in our buy airtime service. They are brick and mortar businesses thus limited by time and location. Their airtime is always in fixed denominations. The Mobile Service Providers also avail airtime directly to users via mobile money, emergency credit and redeeming of loyalty points, but only within their networks. For CHURA - Apart from being conveniently located in one portal our services are available both online and via SMS 24/7. We also allow for any amount of airtime to and from any network.
