Project Summary
Elevator Pitch

Concise Summary: Help us pitch this solution! Provide an explanation within 3-4 short sentences.

I am a medical practitioner in New Zealand, and semi retired. I wish to explore ways of giving back to the community in my home town in Fiji where I grew up. My areas of interest are in preventative health care especially education, and income generation in rural areas. I have good local support.

About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Poor lifestyles, lack of quality healthcare in rural areas, outdated and poorly diversified agricultural methods, social isolation especially for the women folks.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

Identifying one village as model for change, education on healthy eating, lifestyle changes, education on crop diversification with figures to show potential improvements in income, assistance with sourcing appropriate plants/seeds etc. setup some rural microprojects where women can find employment and network with each other
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

An example would be adopting a village, getting to know the inhabitants, identifying their health needs, addressing them first, then implementing some health education programs using the local school classrooms, especially to the women. Meanwhile identifying the social and financial status of the different families, assessing ways in which their income can be improved if they are struggling. Also finding some local village based cottage industry eg pottery where women can come work and network with other women .

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

the above is just an idea of how adopting a village in need by an individual can produce change
Sustainability

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

I have tagged some funds for this project, and am in position to raise more by doing lucrative locum work in rural Queensland, Australia. For long term sustainability I need to identify areas of need, a plan of action, a key person to work alongside me and a five year plan. If the project is tested and worthwhile spreading to other communities then I will need to source funding elsewhere.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

I had seen this idea adopted by a small religious group in Gujarat, India more than 10 years ago. They had the enthusiasm, made networked with the community effectively. I also know of groups in NZ that make short trips to Fiji for medical camps, in which I have participated.
