We would like to develope and run a Counseling Centre for people suffering from Alzheimer's desease, their families and carers. The institution will be located within the Alzheimers Centre Care Home in Olsztyn.

About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

The region currently does not have a support institution which would cover all the needs of the families and carers of Alzheimer inflicted people. The numbers of people inflicted with the deasese keep growing due to the aging of society. The people are left on their own, without a place where they could talk about their problems and also get the best quality professional advice and exchange expirence in dealing with their everyday problems.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

The Care and Information Centre will provide participation in a support group, professional counselling from a psychiatrist, neurologist, geriatrist, psychologist, a nurse, lawyer and a social worker. Thanks to a consulting room with full extent of medical treatments available, people afflicted with the disease will be able to conduct memory , physical function and exercise tests and get firs aid help on the spot. The Information Centre will establish a database of specialists, carers, public and private institutions dealing with problems connected to Alzheimers disease. The Centre will also provide information on the procedures following the diagnosis and the formal and procedural steps connected with dealing with progress of disease.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

A person diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease can be directed to the Centre directly by social services. This will ensure the person will get the proper care right from the beginning of his/hers struggle with the disease. The patient and his family/carers will receive professional information and support. That will ease the shock related with the diagnosis and help to calmly pass through the worst moments.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

For the beneficiaries : – access to methods of help such like the support group – specialistic care and support – access to newest info on the diseas and methods of treatment – individual help in customising the livigspace of the Alzheimer patients to their specific needs – nursing help For the NGO: – realising an innovative concept of creating a unique, pioneering establishment in which a search for new solutions and ways of dealing with the sickness of a close person is a must. – Setting down new standards of counselling and helping – preventing the exclusion of elderly people For the business partner: – possibility to work with larger number of patients and their families – access to a facility with a modern social background – permanent co-operation

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

Realisation of the established goal ( the creation of the Information and Care Centre) will reduce social exclusion and lower the helplessness of the families and caretakers of the Alzheimer's sufferers. Within the institution they will find a friendly, attractive place fulfilling their needs. . Thanks to the Information and Care Centre the families of the sick will be able to be to take part in social life and will be given a place in which they will be able to relax, keep in touch with culture, find help and regain their joie de vivre.
Sustainability

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

The project is financially sustainable thanks to public funding and own resources.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

Currently there aren't any institutions covering this kind of social care and support in this geographical area. This project is innovative and unique for the region. Care of Alzheimer's patients lies within the filed of work done by local social services which run various form of help and support aimed at patients and their families, none of them however as complex and innovative as the one described by the project. Providing help not only for the patient, but also for the family and caretakers is a unique form of care uncommon in Poland an non-existent in the region.

Founding Story

The Alzheimer's Centre has been providing a complex day care for patients for several years. The need for its services and the requirements for developing a a more information-related institution not only for the sufferers but also for the families became obvious quite early on. The concept of creating a place of comfort and security for both patients and their carers led to establishing a cooperation with “Kompas”. The owner of the company had previously co-worked with the Centre and is a highly trained professional in the field of psychology.

Team

The project is a joint creation based on the cooperation between Stowarzyszenie Europejskie Centrum Wsparcia Społecznego Helper, a NGO managing the Alzheimer's Centre and "Kompas"is a company established in 2013, run by Izabela Gąsiorowska-Wojtulewicz, a psychologist specialising in developmental and geriatric psychology.
