About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

In only 15 years 70% of the worlds population will have, especially in Asia, urbanized consuming more than 85% of the worlds energy. How can we help the world’s cities to become sustainable, ecological, healthy, and thriving without hampering it's citizens desire for mobility? How can we help people to NOT drive where there is a lot of traffic and parking is not available?

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

The application uses a live data-stream to provide a simple but smart interface where the users can see the open parking spaces around them. With a simple color-coding, the user can see of the parking lot is available (blue), getting problematic (yellow), or almost full (red). Further, the user see the distance and direction where the parking lot is through the location and the size of the icon in the interface.By touching one of the park icons, the app displays a map with directons to the chose parking lot.This location-based application uses an augmented reality layer to provide a 3D world view where, while progressing throughout the city, the location of the parking lot on the screen moves with the user.

It is 6 PM Friday night in Beijing, rush-hour traffic set’s in. Car after car lining up, people eager to get home, go shopping, go out to enjoy the vibrancy of the urban life. Car switching lanes left and right, honking. One lane is blocked by cars with hazard lights on quickly rushing into a road-side store to grab something. Where should I park? You ask yourself. In another scenario, you would be sweating, screaming while slowly moving along. While approaching it the parking lot sign switches to a bright red “full”. But you don’t care. Quickly checking where spots are available, swiftly reserving a parking spot in your favorite mall. Smile, because you don’t need to worry.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

Mobility is the lifeblood of our urban existence. We need to work, shop, and socialize. We play and enjoy the vibrant and exciting urban lifestyle. With 60% of cities with more than 10 million citizens being in Asia, transportation problems need to be solved. ParkerMeister has shown to be an effective tool to orchestrate urban traffic and avoid congestion as well as pollution. Making urban life healthier and better. We could observe a 10% increase in traffic speed during rush-hours, which led to a 8% decrease in commuting times. Since this reduces the time in the car with the engine on we would assume a positive impact on gas consumption overall.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

With many cities globally moving towards a smart city approach, parking data is becoming readily available and the public grows aware of the possibilities that are related to this. Since urban citizens will not stop to move there always will be a need to be mobile. We are actively supporting this development through the development of ParkerMeister and we will launch in various cities in Asia in 2015.

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

At this point the system relies on data being available in several markets. Since the app is done, launching in each market can be completed with minimal footprints. In addition, we are proposing a cost-sharing with parking providers to support the utilization of their space.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

one.motoring does something similar, but they are only focused on Singapore and don't have a event-based platform behind it.

I was stuck in traffic for 1 hour trying to find parking in Orchard street on a rainy Saturday morning on a weekend before Christmas when I thought that I need this service.
