About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

We are currently facing food security issues for a growing population, lack of efficiency and conservation of water and energy, joblessness for skilled and insufficient training for unskilled people. People have health issues exacerbated by lack of acceptable living standards, increasing pollution, destruction of biodiversity and no accountability for the impact on natural resources. Development of current townships lacks sustainable standards.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

We create a self contained township in a suburban/rural area. Its basis is in agriculture; supports a major percentage of township's (about 3200 residents) food needs. 30-50% of township is reserved for growing grains, vegetables, fruits, herbs. it is managed by farmers of the township. 15-30% area reserved for wetlands, bioswales, raingardens, public parks for recreation, stormwater and pollution management, protection and preservation of biodiversity. 30-40% area for multistory residences, commercial/small retail businesses, distributed water and energy management such as water catchment, waste water and solid waste treatment, solar/wind systems on rooftops, parks, streets and hardscapes. Businesses/eco-tourism create jobs for residents.

Farmers - residents of township, nurture its arable area to grow produce items. These items are sold to township residents, local restaurants, grocery stores via community supported agriculture program memberships. Additional revenue comes from eco-tourism and interactive farming programs. Residents live, work and shop in the mixed-use town with jobs in various infrastructure areas, white and blue collar businesses, schools and medical services, thus supporting the local economy. In addition to a district energy system, strategic installed renewable energy provides electricity to residents, businesses and public areas, . Recycled and captured rainwater use reduces dependence on municipal water. The solution prepares us for future living.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

Projected impact Significant savings in consumption of water. Net positive energy generated and sent back to the grid. Reduction of carbon emissions with increase in use of public transportation since many residents commute locally within the township for jobs. CSA food programs provide organic and quality produce to positively impact health of the township. Recreational opportunities abound in the form of walking and biking trails, playground for kids, sporting activities, sustainability awareness programs, indoor and outdoor concerts, food, shopping and entertainment establishments. Growth in revenue from sales and property taxes, public parking, permit fees for businesses and neighborhood development. Reduced crime, increase in real estate value and feeling a sense of living in a real community in harmony with nature. Township will be recognized as a brand for ideal living.

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

The project will be developed as a public-private investment partnership with substantial support of federal and state government grants. Corporate sponsorship in the form of agricultural subsidies will jump start farming activities. Infrastructure items like schools, hospital and community facilities will be sponsored by private or social enterprises. Dues & taxes will be collected for CSA programs, infrastructure maintenance, natural resources.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

Very few independent professionals have developed self sufficient townships. However they don't necessarily establish long term food security, improvement in living standards, economic security, preservation of biodiversity, sufficiency in water and energy needs. The proposed township uses community agriculture as its primary foundation for sustenance. Efficiency measures ensure optimized use of land space for agriculture, infrastructure and recreation. Local commerce ensures continual growth of the township. The township will exist as a self sufficient brand that can be replicated.

Founding Story

Over the last few years I've observed significant construction growth in residential high rises in suburban metro areas in India. However, these buildings lack adequate water supply, have limited parking spaces, scheduled power cuts, distant access to basic services such as banks, grocery stores, library, fitness center, schools, etc. With the rising real estate prices and cost of living, consumers are not getting much ROI for their investment. Residents experience poor health and stress. The environment and biodiversity also suffer with this growth. So, what can be done about it? And I thought - why not create a sustainable township that's self sufficient in food, water, energy and jobs. Design it to be symbiotic with nature.

Great Idea... Does any such model exist that supports the solution? In today's day and age, funding developments of this size comes with the promise of handsome returns despite being heavily subsidized. How is that integrated into this idea? Also the dependency on the agricultural component is unnerving, can this concept exist with a high dependency on any of the commercial components? How?
