Our project aims at youth women empowerment and employement. We aim at establishing a small catering unit for the preparation of buffets and take-away lunches in Tunisia, taking advantage of the traditional culinary skills of girls who live in disadvantaged areas of the country.

About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

There is a certain degree of political risk linked to the moment of "democratic transition" experienced by Tunisia at this time, in particular due to the fact that the action takes place in a “sensitive” neighborhood. It is an uneducated environment where young women often live a situation of marginalization and isolation, so it might be difficult to convince the girls and their families to share the project, especially women with families.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

We will begin the project through public meetings with local authorities, government representatives, the youth of the district and international organizations operating in the same territory in the attempt to present the project and involve the families of the region, showing the possibility of creating a new business starting from the traditional culinary skills of girls, often with a low level of education. After creating the group of women who will participate at the project,we will try to ensure their constant presence in the courses of theoretical and practical training by giveng them a small daily monetary compensation that will help them to understand importance of independence economy as a first step towards personal independence
Impact: How does it Work

We aim at organizing public meetings with local authorities, the youth of the district and government representatives, international organizations, as well as the media to present the activities of the project. We have already involved the “Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Tunisi” in the project and we intend to include also other cultural and institutional associations that will help us to reach a large number of people that would become potential customers of the catering service. We also aim at organizing monthly taste meeting to show to the community the culinary progress of the group of participants.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

The main impact of the project will be the creation of independent catering business with the skills learned during the traing course so that the group will be able to continue working in the catering field after the end of the project. They will be able to create a finished product and deliver it by taking advantage of the synergies among young cooks and the community they live in, so that they will reach the complete active participation, not only in working life, but also in the cultural and civic life of their own country. The durability of '"learning how to cook" after the final phase of the project activities is mainly due to the fact that it would have established strong contacts with the local community so it would operates directly on the territory responding to its needs.

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

The project will ensure its sustainability due to real self-sustaining entrepreneurial activity that may finance with the proceeds of catering its own survival. In this regard, the association kamar has already entered into an agreement with certain authorities and organizations on the Tunisian territory, including the Italian culture institute of Tunis, for the provision of catering services during their public and private cultural events.

Founding Story

The idea came to my mind after meeting in a little village of kef (northen region of Tunisia) an old women who was selling home made food to a group of foreigners arrived in the village for research and in it there were no restaurants. Immediately I thought why not help women to start a new business, starting from an activity that they carry out every day: cooking.
