WHAT IF - Inspiration: Write one sentence that describes a way that your project dares to ask, "WHAT IF?"

What if women could gently dismantle patriarchal systems via an inspiring, energising approach based on highly creative forms of influence?
About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Our current efforts to improve planet and people are extremely fragmented. This reflects the adversarial nature of dominant patriarchal systems. Such systems also prefer thinking and communication styles that are linear and analytical, which often results in bland messaging that has little influence because it doesn’t connect head and heart. Communication that fails to engage people in addressing critical issues is a big barrier to change.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

We urgently need to garner the support of women currently disengaged from efforts to repair our world. To start addressing this, we are creating a sophisticated online entity aimed at increasing the number of women possessing a contemporary form of wisdom that blends global consciousness, feminine values such as empathy and collaboration, plus competence in creative communication, behavioural psychology, systems thinking and digital media. These ‘wise women’ will be able to make sense of ‘wicked’ problems, translate that into clear, creative messages and techniques of influence, and, in an entertaining manner, inspire more women to rise up. Our web portal will be a central hub for sharing best practice and generating new material.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

Imagine a place in cyberspace where a human rights advocate could easily find 20 different proven ways of influencing diverse communities to move away from the tradition of child marriage? It’s also a place where she could source and study effective ways of influencing change around all our complex global issues, from domestic abuse, poverty and human trafficking through to climate change, renewable energy and alternative economic models? Imagine the key to her success as a changemaker was her newly found ability to serve as a catalyst, inspiring and uniting ordinary women around three core messages: o Enough is enough o You are not alone; we will all support each other o We are the ones we have been waiting for

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

Too early in development to answer this meaningfully. However, many highly placed women (and some men) have chosen to connect with us via the social media presence we have maintained over the past six months. We have also been consulting at a conceptual level with senior women here in Melbourne, women who are not only associated with the women's movement, but who also have a strong commitment to the broader issues of human rights, social justice and environmental sustainability. They have been very encouraging and supportive.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

Initial community will communicate in English. As discussion groups and wiki components develop, we will facilitate replication of content in multiple languages, and in styles that both reflect and respect cultural differences. In Melbourne, we will trial offline events that also have an online presence. We will also trial an Australian based division focused on generating revenue via a 'communications agency' business model, servicing organisations committed to social, economic and environmental sustainability. Both the above 'trial' projects can be expanded internationally.

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

We feel we need to attract our main financial support from the following types of entities: * Foundations, NGOs, government bodies and philanthropists whose prime commitment is to the empowerment of girls and women. * Global ethical companies that see commercial benefit in aligning themselves with our community's intention, and being exposed to the 'wise women' target market that includes professional and unpaid communications specialists.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

We haven't found another organisation with the same specific focus as ourselves. Most entities concentrate on a specific set of issues or region. Ours does not focus on any issue as such, only on the way people communicate influentially about those issues. We feel our concept complements the intention of World Pulse: their focus is on enabling more women to communicate and interact via online technology, whereas our focus is on the effectiveness of the communication itself, in terms of its potential to influence others.

Founding Story

Through my work as a writer, corporate comedian and lateral thinking facilitator, I've constantly been exposed to the role played by diverse corporate and government entities in either worsening or alleviating complex global problems. Also, my consciousness around the rights and empowerment of women has been heightened in recent years by witnessing my own wife’s transformation as she transitions from being a 'stay-at-home mother of three’ to a confident contemporary artist. As I researched these issues, the root cause kept returning to the damaging effects of patriarchal systems. I concluded that a way to counter this was via a core of women with the capacity to foster mutual support and spark commitment within other women.

It's mainly me, folks. With some input from my wife, Jennifer. We need to partner with people who are experienced in making a concept like this happen. My background doesn't include management or business expertise. While I wish to continue developing the concept behind the scenes, there is a pressing need for the front end to be driven and led by a core of 'wise women'.
