Concise Summary: Help us pitch this solution! Provide an explanation within 3-4 short sentences.

Soap4Life is an educational project. We give Dutch children information about the importance of hygiene and the hygiene problems in the world through an educational package. With this project children learn about soap, the impact of the use of palm oil and they make their own palm oil free soaps.

About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

There is a big hygiene problem in developing countries. In these countries there’s not enough soap and water cleaners and as a result people get sick. But soap is another important problem. Soap is made of palm oil and the production of palm oil has a big impact on the tropical rain forests in Indonesia. They are cutting down the forests for plantations, a serious problem for the monkeys in the forests but also for the population.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

For working to a better world, I think it’s very important to use children. Because children are our future, they really can make a difference. That’s why my solution begins with education. In the first place I want to inform children about the problem of hygiene and have their attention to the use of palm oil. Through the use of palm oil free soap, we can save the rainforests in Indonesia. For each educational package I donate money for one Emergency Hygiene Kit for a developing country and for protection of the monkey’s in Borneo and Sumatra. The children can sell the soaps they made at school and collect extra money for a better hygiene in developing countries or protection of the tropical rainforests.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

When I sell a package to a school in the Netherlands, the teacher receives all the information about both problems. In first place the children are learning about hygiene in developing countries. They discuss about possible solutions and then they get information about palm oil plantations in Indonesia. After that they can make their own soaps with beautiful colors and delicious fragrances. They sell their soaps to parents, friends or family. After this lesson children are aware of the impact of using palm oil and some of them may use palm oil free products in the future. With the collected money hygiene circumstances can be improved and organizations in Indonesia can protect the tropical rainforests.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

My products have a big social impact because we learn children how to behave for the best hygiene. As a teacher you have a big influence on children so it’s important to learn them the right things. On this moment I’ve sold only a few of this packages with the soap making materials and educational program about soap, but I hope more schools will like this idea. For every package we sell, we donate money to Concern Worldwide for giving one Emergency Hygiene Kit to a family in a developing country. On this moment we sold only two Soap4Life packages, so we ‘saved’ two families. We also donated money to Monkey Business for protecting the monkey’s in Indonesia. In the future I hope to achieve as much as possible children in the Netherlands, but I also want to enlarge my education to developing countries so I can learn the people there about improving the hygiene conditions.

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

I make money by selling products in my web shop. On this moment, I’m only a profit organization. So my web shop is financially sustainable by sales. I collect money for Concern Worldwide, but this is different from my income. In the future I hope to start my own nonprofit organization Soap4Life. With this organization I want to collect money for hygiene in developing countries without making a profit.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

The international soap maker Lush is also working with palm oil free soaps since a few years. But the main goal of this concern is selling luxury soap, while my main goal is involving children in de soap making process. Up to now I saw one other company who sells educational soap programs, but I don’t think their materials are wide enough, because they don’t add information about hygiene in developing countries. They only deliver the soap making materials for schools and donate money to Oxfam Novib. Besides, their packages are more expensive than mine.

Founding Story

When I was seven years old, I made a collection for the people in Kosovo during the civil war there. Our whole village was coming to bring clothes, toys and toilet things. After a few days a big truck was going to Kosovo with thousands gifts. The truck driver made a tape for me so I could see it at home. I’ll never forget the happy faces of the people in Kosovo when they saw the Dutch gifts. Last year I started a web shop for soap and soap making materials. For my study I’m working in education so I decided to do something with education and soap. But since my Kosovo-experience, I know I also love doing something for other people and make the world a little bit better in my own way. That’s why I chose for this project.

Nutrients For All
Where do you ensure the availability of nutrients?

Human wellness and vitality.

If you had greater capacity, which additional sectors would you like your solution to target - either through expansion, partnership, or thought exchange?

Healthy environments.

How specifically would this added capacity help you improve the quality, efficiency, or sustainability of your existing product or service?

Saving the tropical rainforests has something to do with healthy environments, because for a healthier planet we should let nature be nature and we shouldn't step in this proces. Healthy environments is an other goal for me and my business and I hope people will like this because we all need a more healthy environment.
