The focus idea of the project is to create permanent initiatives of football playing and training for the benefit of the youths living in the slums around the city of Ndola and Kitwe. These initiatives, named “Academy of Hope”, will promote through the sport practice: healthy behaviour particularly referred to HIV/AIDS prevention and human rights education and culture.

About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

The main problems identified in the slums of Ndola are: lack of suitable and sustainable programme for the youth development in the slums by the local authorities. The consecuences are the lack of interest of the youths about their future and the abuse of drugs and alchool; according to the UNAIDS data, the HIV prevalence rate in Zambia is around the 15% of zambian population and especially the people between 15 to 24 years. This data is going to increase if the youth are not informed and aware about that topic; lack of access to sport and recreative opportunities and facilities for disable and consequent marginalization and gender bias; lack of right conditions and habitat for positive youth aggregation and relationship in the slums; poor capacities of the families to bring up the youth: increasing need of support in the educational effort by families.

The “Academy of Hope” (AoH) will constitute an unprecedented opportunity for the young people of the poorest and marginalized slums (where is living large part of the population of this area) to experience sport and, at the same time, to increase the self-confidence and the coping skills. The sport practice and the connected educational messages will: prevent missing behaviours about healthy lifestyle; empower the awareness in the youth about their own potentials and talents; improve the capacities to cooperate and sharing values and ideas for the future; strength the values of honesty, mutual respect and nonviolent attitude. Furthermore the AoH activities will offer the chance to support the educational commitment of the schools and the families. The AoH activities will be addressed also to person with disabilities, promoting social and cultural integration and human rights culture and respect.

This project is still at the experimental phase: for the time we are involving 120 under – 16 young people of the Nkwazi slum (Ndola) in sport and recreational activities linked with the ordinary school activities. These activities will increase the attendance at school and reduce the vulnerability in terms of health and social integration. We can observe a progressive increasing of the self reliance capacities in hard situations. Implementing AoH project it expected that: the youth involved will be more aware of HIV / AIDS prevention; the youth will receive an integrated and linked educational support, both by families, schools and AoH; increases the self-confidence and the will to invest in themselves (education, training, relationship); will be constituted small groups and committee, where the youth can analyse their common difficulties and share ideas to cope with; it will be raised awareness and respect of the human rights; the persons with disabilities will have a first access to sport and ricreative activities; it will be implemented a permanent youth football league in the slums; the AoH approach will become a best practice shared by the Governamental Institutions.

Actions that we intend to implement:
organization of tournaments with more than 16 teams, playing 32 matches in a month, in order to create a permanent league with 20 teams, including around 400 youth;
estabilishment of network among the schools (including the existing educational and sporting programmes) to increase the prevention against HIV through sport;
promotion of training programmes about peace and social exclusion problems;
involvement of parents groups in order to empower their educational capacities and the commitment about human rights respect culture and HIV / AIDS prevention;
constitution of small groups and committee, where the youth can analyse their common difficulties and share ideas to cope its;
creation of partecipative environment to analyse and monitor the youth needs and the habitat lacks.

The attending results are:

OUTCOMES
1000 vulnerable children, boys and girls, more informed and aware about the Hiv/Aids risks (transmission, prevention, care), about the non discrimination of different people (ex. sieropositive or people with disabilities) about their rights (children and human rights).

- creation of spaces to involve the young people in sporting activities with the aim and the purpose of growing up considering sport as a second way to education

The vulnerable situation of the young people living in slums of Ndola e Kitwe cities. Youths are often exposed to bad vices such violence and drug abuse, this it will be make more difficult to involved some of them in the activities proposed.

“Cicetekelo” means hope in Bemba (one of the local languages). Consistently with the name, the project aims at giving back hope and dignity to Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVCs).
CYP operates from two (2) centers. The Cicetekelo Nkwazi, also known as phase 1 and based in Nkwazi Compound, was the original base of CYP. Phase one has a community school open to vulnerable children in Nkwazi Compound and other Surrounding compounds. Cicetekelo Misundu, also known as phase two caters for elderly youths that have been referred from phase 1. The two centers also provide various sports and recreation facilities, accommodation and food to the OVCs.

The cicetekelo youth project cooperates strictly with the local social service of Ndola for the identification of the most vulnerable situation about young boys and girls and children. Furthermore there are some community based organizations (Market Commitee) which work in some slums and help the cicetekelo staff to identify the most vulnerable youths at risk of going in the street.

The Story

What was the defining moment that led you to this innovation?

I think about the "Academy of Hope" when I was talking with the cicetekelo staff (teachers, volunteers and the coach) about the opportunity that we can offer to all the vulnerable children and young people which do not have the luck of participate directly in the cicetekelo project. Due to the lack of social amenities in Ndola and Kitwe many children are often exposed to bad vices such as violence and drug abuse. They don't have any opportunity of interact and share ideas through recreation. The "Academies of Hope" wants to be an opportunity for all the children and young people.
