The Khusi Hona Orphan Project

The literal meaning of the Hindi word “khuśī honā” means feel good (feel happy). Our goal at Khusi Hona is to make the lives of Orphans a little easier through simple donations such as educational materials, new uniforms, a hot meal, medical treatments, things that are often taken for granted here in the west. These simple acts of kindness bring some joy to their lives thus making them feel good and feel happy – “The Feel Happy Orphan Project”

The Problem

Mother Theresa of Calcutta was a champion of the Orphans of India, she once said: “We cannot all do great things, but we can do small things with great love.” At Khusi Hona we don’t pretend that we will bring and end to the struggles of orphans around the world but making one small thing happen with great love can make all the difference to one orphan, or perhaps one orphanage at a time. Our goal at Khusi Hona is to make the lives of Orphans a little easier through simple donations such as educational materials, new uniforms, a hot meal, medical treatments, things we take for granted in the west. These simple acts of kindness bring some joy to their lives thus making them feel good and feel happy – “The Feel Happy Orphan Project”

The Solution

Khusi Hona will raise funds for orphans through the use of a digital PR and marketing strategy, social campaign, live blog and an e-commerce feature of the charity, the goal of the platform being scalable and eventually being implemented in other nations across the world. Khusi Hona will seek funding through contributions from individuals, groups, businesses and government agencies. Contributions will be made directly to the web portal set up for contributions as well as through proceeds raised within the e-commerce feature on the website. Users of KhusiHona.org and corresponding social platforms will see live images/videos/blogs and stories directly from the orphanages in India. A call to action will be posted and an opportunity to sponsor that call will be presented. This may vary from small needs such as school uniforms and stationary all the way to large needs such as a new water source or a new facility to house the orphans. Once these needs are fulfilled, the story and final outcomes and successes will also be shared via these digital portals. KhusiHona.org will also house an e-commerce feature selling goods created by local artisans of the region. The offshoot benefit will also help sustain families, villagers and micro economies. The proceeds of these sales will help support the operations of Khusi Hona, the orphans and the local artisans who created the goods.

Example

We already have a network of about 40 orphanages in India to support that are predominantly taking care of young girls who have been abandoned. These girls have been abandoned just because they were born as girls. Our goal at Khusi Hona is to make the lives of Orphans a little easier through simple donations such as educational materials, new uniforms, a hot meal, medical treatments, things that are often taken for granted here in the west.

Budget: $1,000 - $10,000

Marketplace

Considering we are a start up, our challenge as we begin is simply credibility and funding. There are many organizations that support orphans, and they do a wonderful job and are making a difference. What we stride for is that that we have differentiating factor by actually showing the public exactly where their donation is being used, seeing the faces of the exact child that their donation impacted. We are working to build our fan and follower base as well as getting some brand ambassadors on the ground spreading the vision. We foresee that once we get past the critical mass of say 5000 followers on Facebook/Twitter this will be further incentive to see the credibility of the organization. A recent donor said that we are fundamentally a digital reality show, and loved the fresh concept.
