About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

We address lack of awareness of environmental problems and solution, the distance between discourse and action. We also address youth need for a space and urban resilience. We try to bridge the gap between seeing the problem and working for the solution. We see this increasing lack of proper spaces and advice. We know many people want to take action on climate change and environmental issues,as we see our impact on the environment.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

We are a group of young professionals who devote their time to empower youth like us to be able to achieve their projects for environmental and social sustainability. At the same time we provide alternatives for every day choices that will reduce our effect in the environment and create a more unified community. We tackle lack of awareness, but also where to start working towards the solution. We do conscious food workshops, open environmental lessons, urban gardening, creative recycling, youth projects development, peace and conflict resolution workshops, activists and entrepreneur gatherings. With this young people are empowered, have a place and can grow sustainable and environmental projects, and further spread the knowledge and care
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

The primary activities are working with and for youth, for a better environment and healthier life in harmony with the environment. We provide the space for youth to work on any project they want or need that will help them achieve their goals. Some of our work examples are: - Conscious food Thursday; were we prepare healthy food which is not harmful to the environment and recovers local biodiversity. We eat but we also discuss the impacts and solutions of food in the environment. - Talks, workshops, conferences; we try to spread knowledge in various ways. - Activists meetings; we gather activists and people interested in activism of any area to work together . - Gardening; We have a garden open for anyone interested in learning

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

We have been featured in newspapers and TV programs, the town has asked us for help to spread environmental consciousness and responsible consumption. We have worked with over 100 young people and 10 different youth groups in developing projects. Countless meetings from different groups have gathered in our space. The impact is just starting… We have reached many people that were looking for a place to work from the civil society, but also to develop their own ideas and projects. More than 10 different projects have grown from our space and are being implemented, while a wider community is being built.
Sustainability

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

We have been selling healthy and environmentally friendly food in different occasions to pay for the rent of the house. However, this limits the capacity for our reach and achievement. We can still pursue this social enterprise that will educate people about the environment while feeding them, however we need more funds to start it properly.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

There are plenty of groups working with youth around the world, but not in our town. The need for groups to work from civil society is urgent. There are some goverment programs or programs from the international cooperation that work with vulnerable youth, but our aim is to come from the ground and make youth feel in a community where they can develop their ideas. In terms of food, there are NGO's working but mainly on the rural area, NGO's like Oxfam, VSF and local goverments focus on building organic markets and getting the product to the consumer, but none working on the consumer level.
Team

Founding Story

This project was founded after a group of environmental activists ( Reaccion CLimatica) felt the need to expand and improve thier work with youth and the community in general. Although the job they were doing was going great, the saw the need and enthusiasm of many youth people to work on projects and contribute to the comunity. This is why one of the members had the idea of renting a house which will serve as a working and developing place, but also as a place to dream and to build a stronger youth community.

Your Solution
Founding Story: Share a story about the “Aha!” moment that led you to get started and/or to see the potential for this to succeed.

As a group Reaccion Climatica, we had been working for a long time on environemntal awarness and solutions, and we met many people on our way that were interested in doing things but did not know how nor what, or if they did, they did not find the space nor network. So we thought we needed something small that people could do that would help the environment ( people eat every day... so food!!) and something bigger where people could dream, work, know each other and develop goals and projects, so we thought about the house :)

Select Sector(s): To which of Unilever's categories of sustainability does your solution apply?

Nutrition, Greenhouse Gases, Sustainable Agriculture.

Measurable Impact
Audience: Who have you identified as your customers/recipients and why? How will you get your solution to them or engage them in your initiative?

We work mainly with youth, but also anyone interested on the environment and on finding solutions. We give talks on conscious food to all types of people and provide food services and education to them. We believe, kids youth and adults can have a big impact on the environment and their health by changing some consumption patterns. However the house is mainly open for youth to come and develop their projects.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date and expected impact in the future?

We have had actually a lot of impact. We have been invited to many places to talk about the projects and our impact as people on the environment. Also, over 10 projects have been developed in the house and are working for environmental solutions. We have increased our weekly visits from around 10 people to more than 50 people. People come and work on the garden, cook, work on thir projects, use the "library"recources, ask for help and advice. We have held over 7 workshops in the house and over 20 outside the house, and have seen many people changing their lifestyles to more sustainable ones.

Growth, Finance & Leadership
Scaling the Solution: How do you intend to scale your activities over the next two years (e.g., reach new markets, diversify solutions, etc.)? What will make this possible?

We want to expand to a bigger place, where we can have urban farm examples and experiments and where we can have more people at the time, or several meetings going on simultaneously, Our dream is to have a place with a classroom also, where the informal environmental education can take place. We would like to diversify solutions and help people grow their own food, but knowing why. We want more people from all ages and backgrounds to know the impact of food on the environment and their possibilities for solutions.
We want to be able to support more projects, and have a bigger library of ideas and resources . We want to expand the amount of youth engaged with various projects and the cooperation among them.

Financial Sustainability: What is your business model to ensure financial sustainability?

So far, we have been working with our own social enterprise which is a catering service oh healthy and conscious food. We deliver food with low environmental impact to people and events. While there, we explain people about sustainable diets and the importance on the environment, and show them how delicious it can be! With this money we have been supporting the house.

Experience: Please provide examples of any previous entrepreneurial initiatives you have pioneered.

Personally I have worked with microfinancing in Nepal with trafficked woman. We gave them grants/loans together with vocational training so they can start their own small business. I learnt that you have to have plan A, B, C... that many things can go wrong, but you have to keep trying.
Other people from the group have also had experience with entrepreneurial activities, such as green communications, a ecological ranch in the woods and others.
