About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

• How to lessen wastes? The existence of wastes problem pollutes the environment and shows that people nowadays are less conscious about their environment. • How to lessen wastes in the future?Lessening the wastes today is also reducing the wastes in future. If the wastes today will not be reduced the next generation will suffer. • How to inculcate to the youth the importance of waste management? The youth should realize the importance of SWM.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

RISE from Waste is a project for 17 high schools in Aklan (a province in Philippines). It is a unique project that will lessen the problem about wastes today and in the future by inculcating to the youth the importance of solid waste management through activities that will engage them and change their perspectives towards solid wastes. As the name implies the project will require the youth to recycle solid wastes, innovate or think of new and creative things to create recycled products, sell and earn what they will be able to create. This project will motivate the youth by using rewards everytime they engage with this project as the same time trying to solve the root cause of wastes problem which is the lack of motivation to recycle.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

I noticed that youth are attracted by rewards like additional points when they attend a seminar or whatever and this is also the kind of approach of my solution. Wastes Bank will serve as a place where students can exchange their wastes (plastic wrappers, plastic bottles, empty bottles, used papers, dried leaves) into food or school supplies. The goal is to change the way the students think that wastes are useless and should just be thrown and also to motivate them to recycle. Another is the activity called “TRASHure” which gives emphasis that trashes have value when recycled. During the Ati – Atihan Festival, the schools will showcase and sell all their recycled things and the income will be used then for keep the Wastes Bank running.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

My solution is just at the idea stage so there is no impact yet as of now. I am expecting that the rewards will be able to motivate the students to involve in this project since the rewards are foods and school supplies which are their needs. I am also expecting that the schools will participate because aside from the schools will be cleaner; they will also help change the perspective of the students towards wastes.
Sustainability

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

RISE from Waste is actually an income generating project because the outputs will be sold and the income will be used for the operation of the Wastes Bank to keep this project going. The remaining outputs after Ati – Atihan Festival, can be sold in stores in Boracay Island as souvenirs or in stores in Kalibo since these are the high potential markets in the province. Other budget can be in a form of donations and solicitations.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Municipal Planning and Development of the municipalities are also addressing the problem. The difference of RISE from Waste from the projects of the government is that it involves the youth and at the same time it benefits the youth. RISE from Waste is working on changing the way the youth perceive garbage/wastes unlike those government projects which just focuses on the immediate and physical result in the environment.
Team

Founding Story

After I experienced many times of failing to be part of our school’s teams for marketing competitions, I searched for online marketing plan competitions and I saw this. Last year our group made a marketing plan about waste and a research about SWM. Those experiences inspired me and gave me idea to involve the youth to lessen wastes because even though the government is making efforts the problem still exists. I also thought of rewards to be given to the youth when they help in reducing the wastes to motivate them. I also find it common among us teenagers that we can easily be encouraged by rewards like we go to meetings when there are free snacks, free concerts and many more. With these ideas, I came up with the concept of RISE from Waste.

Select Sector(s): To which of Unilever's categories of sustainability does your solution apply?

Waste.

Measurable Impact
Audience: Who have you identified as your customers/recipients and why? How will you get your solution to them or engage them in your initiative?

High School students of in selected schools in the province of Aklan – The project will need their participation because the project is actually designed for them.17 High Schools in Aklan (teachers staffs and the management of the schools) – The support of the teachers and the schools itself will be important since they will serve as the facilitators and venues for this project.Letters will be sent to the heads of the selected schools to encourage them to adapt my solution.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date and expected impact in the future?

My solution is just at the idea stage so there is no impact yet as of now. I am expecting that the rewards will be able to motivate the students to involve in this project since the rewards are foods and school supplies which are their needs. Growth, Finance & Leadership
Scaling the Solution: How do you intend to scale your activities over the next two years (e.g., reach new markets, diversify solutions, etc.)? What will make this possible?

The RISE from Waste is actually designed on its first year that is why there will only be 17 selected high schools for this project. Two years from now, the RISE from Waste will invite more or hopefully all the high schools in the province of Aklan. This will be possible with the support of the Department of Education and the government of Aklan in terms of the promotion of the outputs of this project and of course the project itself. This will also be possible with the support of the Aklanons and of course the management of the high schools.

Financial Sustainability: What is your business model to ensure financial sustainability?

RISE from Waste is actually an income generating project because the outputs will be sold and the income will be used for the operation of the Wastes Bank to keep this project going. The remaining outputs after Ati – Atihan Festival, can be sold in stores in Boracay Island as souvenirs or in stores in Kalibo since these are the high potential markets in the province. Other budget can be in a form of donations and solicitations.

Experience: Please provide examples of any previous entrepreneurial initiatives you have pioneered.

This is actually the first entrepreneurial initiative that I pioneered because the marketing and marketing communication plans that can be also considered entrepreneurial initiatives that I mentioned were done by our group and not just me. However I can also say that I have been inclined with solid waste management since the marketing plan that we did is about reducing the plastics and we also did a research regarding SWM.

Here are the supporting details of my project:

Problems
• How to lessen improper solid waste management?
Improper solid waste management is undeniably one of the most serious problems in the world nowadays. The existence of improper solid waste management worsens the environmental problems and shows that people nowadays are becoming less conscious about their environment.

• How to lessen the wastes in the future?
Lessening the wastes today is also reducing the wastes in future. The problem nowadays about improper waste disposal is still existing and worsening because people are becoming more attached to gadgets and other trends to the point that they forget about their environment. The worst part is if the wastes today will not be reduced the next generation will suffer.

• How to inculcate in the minds of the young people the importance of proper solid waste management?
This is actually one of the causes why the improper solid waste management still exists. Most of the young people of today are busy about their Facebook, twitter and instagram accounts. The youth of today is the next generation who will take charge of the natural resources in the near future and there is a need for them to realize the importance of proper solid waste management for their own good and for them to pass it on to the next generation who are their sons and daughters.

Target Audience
 High School students in the province of Aklan – The project will need their participation because the project is actually designed for them. The project is actually targeting high school students because during high school it is the time when people become mature and more responsible so it is a perfect time to instil to them something like the importance of proper solid waste management.
 Selected High Schools in Aklan (teachers staffs and the management of the schools) – The support of the teachers and the schools itself will be important since they will serve as the facilitators and venues for this project. There will be one high school selected in every municipality and the criterion for selecting is the number of students. In other words, in every municipality the high school with the most number of students will be selected.

Objectives
To lessen the problem about wastes today and in the future by inculcating to the minds of the youth of today the importance of proper solid waste management through activities that will engage them and change their perspective towards solid wastes.

Big Idea
RISE (Recycle, Innovate, Sell and Earn) from Waste
RISE (Recycle, Innovate, Sell and Earn) from Waste is a project for all the high schools in Aklan (a province in Philippines). It is a unique project that will lessen the problem about wastes today and in the future by inculcating to the minds of the youth of today the importance of proper solid waste management through activities that will engage them and change their perspective towards solid wastes. As the name implies the project will require the youth to recycle solid wastes, innovate or think of new and creative things out of the recycled things, sell and earn what they will be able to create.

Strategy
RISE (Recycle, Innovate, Sell and Earn) from Waste Project Timeline

March:
Trash Talk. The “trash talk” here refers to talking or communicating to the high schools in the province of Aklan about the RISE from Waste Project. During this month activities will involve sending letters to the heads of selected high schools followed by a gathering wherein there will be presentation of proposal to the high schools’ management. The letters will serve as the first mode of communication to the heads/principals of selected high schools and it will encourage them to implement the RISE from Waste Project. The letter will also ask the heads/principals and their staffs to attend the Trash Talk. The Trash Talk is a gathering wherein the details of the RISE from Waste Project will be presented and at the same time the benefits that the selected schools will have if they will implement the project. The Trash Talk will not just present the project and have open forum but it will also present the problem about the improper solid waste disposal and the lack of involvement of the youth to solid waste management. The heads/principals and their staffs are given one week after the Trash Talk to decide if they want to implement the project and they will be contacted for their answers.

April and May:
Get WASTEd (Waiting for All Students To be Engaged). During the months of April and May, everything that is needed for the RISE from Waste Project will be prepared. There will be a Wastes Bank that will be put up in each school but if the school has a school canteen there is no need to put up another room as the Wastes Bank. The school canteens of the selected high schools will be painted with white and yellow green to represent a greener environment and there will be also a place where the solid wastes are stored according to its classification (Plastics, Bottles, Papers and Leaves). The Wastes Bank will serve as a place where the students can exchange their garbage (plastic wrappers, plastic bottles, empty bottles, used papers, dried leaves) into something that they want which can be food, school supplies or anything that is available in the Wastes Bank. The goal of the Wastes Bank is to change the way the students think garbage or wastes are useless and should just be thrown. The posters about the RISE from Waste Project will also be posted during these months including the exchange rates in the Wastes Bank.

June to December:
TRASHformation. The classes here in the Philippines start at the month of June. For this month, the RISE from Waste Project will be introduced to all the high school students in the selected high schools in the province of Aklan and the RISE from Waste Project will officially start. During the month of December, the students can start recycling or turning the solid wastes accumulated by the Wastes Bank into new, creative and useful things that can be showcased and sold.

January
TRASHure. Treasure is defined as anything that has a value; the activity this month is called “TRASHure” to give emphasis that trashes (garbage or solid wastes) have value especially when they are recycled or turned into something new, creative and useful. Every third week of January Aklan is celebrating a week – long celebration of Ati – Atihan Festival. During the Ati – Atihan Festival Exhibit, the high schools that joined the RISE from Waste Project will showcase all their recycled things. All the recycled things will be sold during the Ati – Atihan Festival and the income will be given back to the schools depending on the price of their products that were sold. The income will be used then for keep the Wastes Bank running.
