Project Summary
Elevator Pitch

Concise Summary: Help us pitch this solution! Provide an explanation within 3-4 short sentences.

The project aims to address people’s livelihood needs for income generation, fuel wood, timber, fruit, fodder and non-timber products while halting and reversing the trend of forest loss and related environmental degradation by promoting vegetable and fruit tree growing and agro-forestry systems.

WHAT IF - Inspiration: Write one sentence that describes a way that your project dares to ask, "WHAT IF?"

the world only ate fruits and greens from forests and save people from diabets and high blood pressure
About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Over the last few years, the forest cover in Buikwe district has significantly reduced. According to the Local Representative, local people reported that many parts of the district had extensive forest and tree cover but now most of it is gone. This has resulted in loss of biodiversity (including medicinal plants and wild animals in the former hunting areas) and severe land degradation due to soil erosion and loss of fertility.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

Assist at least 200 local farmers, particularly poor and disadvantaged women, to engage in fruit and tree growing and increase vegetable crop production for improved food security and income generation by among other things, enabling them to access improved or high-yielding seeds; improve their soil fertility; and minimize pre- and post-harvest losses due to pests, disease and poor crop husbandry Enhance capacity of farming households in Ssi sub county and surrounding areas to apply appropriate technologies and sustainable farming practices (including: composting, soil and water conservation, integrated pest management, environmentally sustainable application of agrochemicals, etc) through trainings and extension services
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

At least 500 farmers will enhance the quality of the agricultural products by improving post-harvest processing, handling and storage, including through training in efficient processing and appropriate handling practices for different agricultural products and quality control systems and technologies (e.g. refrigerated transportation and storage);

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

At least 500 farmers will add value to their produce including through small-scale agro-processing

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

At least 500 farmers will access improved (high-yielding, quick maturing or pest-resistant) seeds of crop vegetable varieties and fruits that are adapted to local conditions and ecological sustainability, including seasonal vegetables and fruits including: avocados, mangos, guava, citrus, jack fruit and papaya, Eucalyptus pine among others
Sustainability

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

the project requires funding to be elevated and sustainability will be automatic as the products i.e. fruits from the trees will be sold and or processed to add value for income generation

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

tree products such as wood are wanted by constructing companies, fruits are on demand in Buikwe district, Mukono, Kampala by all juice processing factories as well as Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda.

Founding Story

Increased malnutrition among many families, high poverty levels, drastic changes in weather with very prolonged droughts due to environmental degradation stirred me to do something to curb the situation.

Audience: Who have you identified as your customer/recipient groups and do these groups value your solution for different reasons? How do you engage different customer/recipient groups to deliver your solution?

women and farmers will be engaged because they already have vast lands on which the projects can be implemented

Scaling the solution: How would the prize money and publicity help you to achieve your objectives over the next two years?

the money will be used to train selected farmers in advanced agricultural management skills, procure seedlings to be distributed to farmers, procure farm tools, pesticides and to monitor

Experience: Please provide examples of any previous entrepreneurial initiatives you have pioneered

I mobilized the community of 486 house holds where each house hold contributed 20000 shillings per year over and they constructed three water tanks and a six door latrine for Namukuma, Sanganzira and Kijiiko primary schools. The initiative helps to improve hygiene and sanitation plus hand washing habits in the schools hence reduced diarrhea incidences.
