Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Entire regions, even including parts of several countries, have been greatly affected in their economy by cattle diseases such as Foot and Mouth Disease and by the long duration of the decontamination process until the region’s meat can be exportable again. In 2001, Foot and Mouth Disease caused my country, Uruguay, economic losses of more than 500,000,000 USD.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

The expansion of a disease can be prevented by acquiring information as soon as the outbreak occurs. Therefore, Chipsafer is a platform that can detect changes in cattle physiological parameters as well as the animal’s precise geographic location in an autonomous, continuous and remote way. Our goal is that through Chipsafer the whole world can acquire secure, fast and objective information regarding the occurrence of cattle diseases outbreaks. Chipsafer is also useful to combat cattle rustling since when the animal is being stolen an emergency message is immediately sent.
Impact: How does it Work

From the point of view of the rural producer, the social and economic benefit will be undeniable because it generates more security on its activity. By decreasing the incident of FMD and its widespread transmittal it reduces the apprehension among the small producers and the wage earners, who are directly affected during the months that the epidemic lasts. In the case of the small producer, the benefits of the system are more extreme, since FMD could involve the death of a whole herd. The service sector also benefits, since it drives the micro economy in developing countries. The appearance of FMD decreases the country’s activity, and in prolonged periods it can lead to recessions.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

The observable impact is huge and covers almost all the regions and countries in the world, especially the developing countries, where Foot and Mouth Disease has had its most extensive development and reaches dramatic levels, to the point that some regions have been depopulated of its cattle stock, either because of death due to infection or because of the "sanitary rifle" of the authorities. In any case, the damage to society and to the State is enormous and takes a lot of time to recover the international markets, being exports severely limited in both quantity and price.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

This Project originated in Uruguay, a country that has suffered enormously from Foot and Mouth Disease consequences since the nineteenth century. The experience is deplorable because of the damages caused to the small rural producers, with repercussions across the whole society. The advantage of this work is that this type of platform has the widest impact, benefiting not only farmers and private companies, but also countries and trading regions at its highest levels.

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

We have come up with a business model that makes Chipsafer a very good invenstment for the farmer. The service is economic and provides benefits for the farmer to improve his production.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

We filled patents on Chipsafer in different countries and in 2013 we won the Best Young Inventor Award by the World Intellectual Property Organization. We also won the International Telecommunication Union Young Innovators Competition 2012.

Founding Story

In 2001 I witnessed how an outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease greatly affected the economy of my country. At that point I started thinking if I could design a system capable of early detecting cattle diseases. Years later, after graduating as an Electronic Engineer, I took up this idea and designed Chipsafer. I decided to contact a friend of mine, Sebastian Berchesi, who is also an Electronic Engineer and has experience on managing startups and we co-founded IEETECH to develop Chipsafer.

Audience: Who have you identified as your customer/recipient groups and do these groups value your solution for different reasons? How do you engage different customer/recipient groups to deliver your solution?

Chipsafer benefits farmers worldwide and in particular developing countries whose economies depend largely on cattle. We had several appearences in the National and Regional press with great results. We were contacted by several Farmers (big, medium and small) who want to use our platform for different needs.

Scaling the solution: How would the prize money and publicity help you to achieve your objectives over the next two years?

This prize will be extremely important to achieve our biggest goal that is that through Chipsafer the whole world can acquire secure, fast and objective information regarding the occurrence of cattle diseases outbreaks. Furthermore, the prize will give us visibility in other markets and the online sessions and the Accelerator Workshop provided will be extremely helpfull for us to scale-up. We believe that the Unilever Sustainable Living Young Entrepreneurs Award is key for us to take our start-up to the next level.

Experience: Please provide examples of any previous entrepreneurial initiatives you have pioneered

Since I was 4 years old my biggest passion has always been space and technology. My goal is to do scientific research and develop technologies that can positively impact the lives of people all over the world. I am co-Chair of Space Generation Advisory Council, a global non-profit organization in support of the United Nations Programme on Space Applications. I am co-founder of CloudStat, start-up where we use drones for precision agriculture.
