About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Overfished, polluted, taken for granted, carelessly abused and destroyed oceans and seas are the largest living space on Earth and it is fast deteriorating. Marine economy growth is the long term strategy to support sustainable growth in the marine and maritime sectors. Seas and oceans are drivers for the world economy. This 'blue' economy in EU represents roughly 5.4Mln jobs and generates a gross added value of almost €500Bln/year.

Eco-Dolphin provides a solution to “sustainable development and life”. The surface pollution in the seas which are the basis of the ecosystem will be overcome & a livable environment will be guaranteed for the marine life. With the waste recycling process gathered & through the mobile lab equipped with various biosensors, we can •protect the environment, reducing the amount of the waste sent to the solid waste storage area of the city •help transmit & store the rubbish •protect the natural resources, saving the raw materials •save about %95 of the energy •slow down the global warming •provide new employment opportunities •track, collect data, provide vital statistics for marine & maritime industries and also for local communities

Lake Büyükçekmece (Turkish: Büyükçekmece Gölü) is formed at the point, where the river Karasudere flows into the Marmara Sea. Located in the south of Çatalca district west of Istanbul, Turkey, it is used as a freshwater reservoir in Istanbul serving %17 of the population of >15Million people. Buyukcekmece Lake is experiencing rapid growth urbanization. As a result, the number of fish species known in the lake has decreased from 30 in the past to 15 within last 15 years. As our initial action, we would like to investigate the pollution levels and create public awareness on the possible consequences via a mobile user-friendly application.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

The impact will be the increase of diversity in aquatic life, stopping the urbanization around the lake and keep serving 17 millions of people living in Istanbul.As we face the flow of petroleum rather than petroleum leakage especially in that example, we will learn the dimension of the harm for the life quality of the organisms in the following days Everyday 5000 liters of petroleum leak and cause the oxygene rate to decrease, covering the sea surface.Among the primary damages can be the destruction and as a result the death of the marine animals living in the gulf of Mexico.As the secondary damages, it is put forward that the movement of the dispersed petroleum is not guessable and will threat the life quality of every marine animal on the coast where it disperses Among the more long termed damages is the fact that the whales generations producing in that environment will be in danger.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

Aim to design a mobile water monitoring laboratory with the robot Eco-Dolphin, pH, heat, conductivity, salinity, turbidity, oxygene resolution, nitrate and nitrite parameters in the marine environment measured. It's target to define and getrid of the solid and liquid wastes in the sea surface. The major target of the project is“ Sustainable development and life”.Thanks to the robot “Eco-Dolphin”, the surface pollution in the seas which are the basis of the ecosystem will be overcome and a livable environment will be overcome and a livable environment will be guaranteed for the marine animals .

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

There is a major inefficiency and high cost overhead in environmental and waste inspection of marine traffic. We plan to propose Eco-Dolphin to Ministry of Environment for the waste inspection of marine traffic and significantly reduce their operational cost. We also plan to partner with NGOs like Turmepa, Fisherman's Association for further improvement with water data collection and analysis. Thirdly we plan to start mobile lab operations.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

At the moment, waste water inspection is done with manpower and highcost logistics like helicopters, boats etc. There is no NGO, nor any private or governmental institution employing unmanned or less costly inspection equipment. All waste removal is handled by manpower. There are some global solutions mostly focusing on oil spill removal or pool cleaning.

Founding Story

I was an undergradate in Mechatronics. One day, at the robotics lab, I suddenly became aware of my surroundings. All the men participating at the lab were basicly ordering around the women to bring them tea or cigarettes. That was the breaking point and the decision moment. There had to be a robot which was revolutionary, innovative and ecological. It would be socially, economically and environmentally sustainable. Then I went to the seashore at the Boshporus and saw the dolphins jumping. I decided to create a robot which would keep the shores clean and help the community with its data collection through its sensors. This robot would be a dolphin as it would have the same humane, friendly, collective characteristics.

Scaling the solution: How would the prize money and publicity help you to achieve your objectives over the next two years?

Currently we have two working prototypes, we would like to add another prototype which would include both features of the previous two prototypes, finish the industrial design work, prepare the M2M and cloud infrastructure, prepare the user interface for the data analysis, prepare the manufacturing steps for serial production. Next step will be selectin a pilot zone for the stress test and collect data. We would like to assess which type of data collection is essential for our client/user base with an open forum. Our target is to realize the final prototype, assess information output, design the best user experience so it can be utilized by many stakeholders and exported to many countries.

Experience: Please provide examples of any previous entrepreneurial initiatives you have pioneered

Previously, Eco-mat project (recycling automation for waste management) was realized and approx >50.000Euro was funded by the Ministry of Industry for its production.

The project was successfully completed and delivered to the Ministry of Industry.

In addition to Eco-mat, 11 additional ecological projects were realized such as Eco-home, Eco-copter, Virtual Race Car, etc.
