About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

People throw waste scatteredly everywhere that has created a great hindrance to keep the environment clean. In a underdeveloped society, Where the basic needs are often denied of, it is very difficult for them to concentrate on environmental issues. That is why, often the non-profit initiatives fail to reach mass people and to create large impact. Moreover, people need a good inspiration to engage in awareness creating activities.

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

The project will set up five vending machines at five different locations of Dhaka city, that will offer people money in exchange of PET bottles. This will provide people with enough reasons to engage in clean environment process. The machines will be set up on congested area like shopping malls, markets, university centers or public places. The collected PET bottles will be sold to the recyclers and the project will be self sustainable by earning from that. Thus, the project will have the following impacts on people- 1.They will be used to not to throw waste away, 2.They will be inspired to show creativity with waste management, 3.They, especially the children will learn about importance of clean environment, 4. They will earn.
Impact: How does it Work

Example: Walk us through a specific example(s) of how this solution makes a difference; include its primary activities.

X and her friends often get together in New Market, Dhaka and have beverages frequently. But they leave the trashes scatteredly on walkways every time. They never bothered about clean environment. One day, they found a vending machine beside their hang out place that was offering a penny for each beverage bottle. Out of curiosity, one of their friends dropped a bottle in that machine and got a penny! It was the most interesting and funny experience for them, that left a great impact on them. From then, they started dropping bottles in the machine out fun that habituated them subconsciously. Thus, they finally understood that it was a smart move to teach them importance of clean environment. Later on, the started inspiring others too.

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

There will be five machines set up at five different places in Dhaka. Each machine has the capability of receiving two to five hundred bottles (250 ml to 2 liter bottle) approximately in a day. So, each machine will collect six thousand to fifteen thousand bottles in a month. Five machines will be able to keep environment clean from thirty thousand to seventy five thousand bottles approximately. That means, the project can engage thirty thousand to seventy five thousand people in this process approximately. There is a good chance that at least half of this above mentioned population (15000 to 37500 people) will be habituated to this process. And, we can also hope that at least half of these habituated people (7500 to 18750 people) will become aware of clean environment in each month.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

If the project made 7500 to 18750 people aware of clean environment each month, it will make 90000 to 225000 people aware in a year. This is a considerable number to create a culture of awareness. And this large number of people will put pressure on state and non-state actors to reshape clean environment strategies. Moreover, this project will engage students, experts, activists, journalists etc. as volunteer basis that will reach more people in the society. After five to ten years, this community will play a great role to keep our country clean.

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

Five machines will collect 30000 bottles (2 liter bottle) in a month, that weighs 1250 Kg, that earns 50000 Taka per month. Operation cost of five machines is 45000 Taka per month. The rest of the 5000 Tk will be kept as security money. Each vending machine costs 150000 Tk to be built. The project needs assistance from the investors in this regard. It also needs 300000 Tk for promotional activities in the first year from the investors.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

Interestingly, there is no competitor in this Bangladeshi market with this vending machine idea. Although there is huge waste collection business going on Dhaka city, the project will not contest with them as people voluntarily will drop bottle into vending machines. Also, there is no other similar government or non government initiative going on. So, in one sense, it will be a monopoly initiative by this project.

Founding Story

The team members have been known to each other since a long ago through a book reading program nationwide. They are also engaged into other social activities together like environment movement, theatre, cultural activities in Dhaka. So, the founder thought to turn this friendship engaged into a noble cause and to serve the nation.

There are three members in the team. Each of them will be treated as founder. Later on, more people will be added on as members to this team. The project will work as an initiative of three members team, that will eventually convert into a non-profit organization in future. The team will work as partnership basis.
