About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

Komodo Island is famous with its amazing natural resources and its komodo dragon. However, due to its dry climate, people around Komodo National Park Area in East Nusa Tenggara faced severe water problem for years. The only available water source is brackish water from local well, Fresh water available only at the nearest port of Labuan Bajo, 2 hour travel by boat, where they have to buy the water. Thus water becomes costly and scarce.

In 2011, Komodo WAI was established and together with the community we started to build clean water stations to provide local water supply. The intake was obtained from brackish water well, which was then purified using reverse osmosis technology, to meet the standard of water safe for drinking. The water was then distributed through gallon size jerry can. On the first phase, distribution is focused on Papagarang Island, where Komodo WAI water treatment is located. Currently we have served 7 villages in Komodo Islands, covering Papagarang (345 household), Mesa (450), Warloka (325), Komodo (500), Rinca (300), Soknar (80), Lente Golohmori (700), and Kukusan (80).

In Papagarang Island, we first installed Komodo WAI reverse osmosis water treatment. The technology purifies brackish water of TDS 9000 ppm into water safe for drinking of TDS 11-13 ppm. The result is also certified by health department. The water treatment plant creates new job opportunity for local people (as water agents, water delivery services, etc), and a fraction of annual profit goes to the village community fund. We also developed a system of marketing and distribution, i.e. transportation of water using fisherman boats, and water sales agents in each islands. This way we increase affordability and supply of clean water, with actively involving local people

Impact: What is the impact of the work to date? Also describe the projected future impact for the coming years.

Currently we have served 7 villages in Komodo Islands, covering Papagarang (345 household), Mesa (450), Warloka (325), Komodo (500), Rinca (300), Soknar (80), Lente Golohmori (700), and Kukusan (80). By April 2014 Komodo WAI have distributed more than 13000 gallon of water to the 7 villages. With safe for drinking water, occurrence of gastro-intestinal infection (e.g. diarrhea) has declined. In the future we plan to expand the water treatment by adding solar power technology, considering the high potential in the area. Komodo WAI project has also boost the confidence of Papagarang villagers, as they felt that the island is worthy for investing (previously they felt left behind by local government). We expect this project to become a model of sustainable water supply project for remote areas, in which community-private sector-government work in partnership to achieve better living

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

• Creating a more solid sales agency system, e.g. better training, promotional material. Prioritizing women agents as micro entrepreneurship. • Establishing a coop system in the village, to combine water sales agency and food distribution channel. • Expand to Labuan Bajo by aiming different market of medium economic class, thus creating higher margin. • Product diversity, e.g. ice block for cold storage, thus creating higher margin • Improve sanitation facility as part of water recycling system, which also serve as health campaign • Support local children education e.g. community library

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

We currently sell 1 gallon of water Rp 6000 in Papagarang, and Rp 8000 in other villages/ islands. This becomes the main revenue for our company, which is used for operational cost and investment payback. We also strive to increase efficiency, e.g. good housekeeping practice for operational procedure, and seeking alternative energy to the current diesel powered generator. The next plan is to expand to Labuan Bajo high margin commercial market.

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

Previously there was an effort from local government to grant a reverse osmosis plant for Rinca, Komodo, and Mesa islands. However, it was lacking the concept of sustainable management. People got water for free, thus resources for maintenance was limited. Komodo Water apply affordable charges to ensure continuity of the service. We are also flexible with the payment system to accommodate people’s livelihood pattern (People pay after they received income from selling their fish catch of the day). Jerry cans were chosen as it was considered the most appropriate for mobilisation.

Founding Story

As I was going on a vacation to Komodo Island, I saw a remote local fishermen village, where clean water is scarce. Due to the position the village is beyond the government’s outreach. It turned out that there are several other villages with similar problem. The only locally available water is brackish water. I know that the technology was available to manage this problem. Thus when I returned to Jakarta, I tried to conduct survey on the technology as well as fundraising. After a year, clean water station was finally built in collaboration with local community and village authority. We share and together build the first and only high quality drinking water station in the Komodo National Park


We have simple structure. On HQ, we are supported by campaign staffs and engineering staff for project development. On the field, we have 1 CEO with 1 Head of Staff who has: 2 staffs of local Papagarang, 1 Captain for the water boat, more than 10 agents for 7 villages for full-time; with more than 10 part-time workers of women and men to do daily operation (washing cans, filling, and transfer to agents).In the future, we will recruit Site Manager

Our customers are local families who otherwise have to either consume brackish water or obtain water at a very high cost. The water is for drinking and cooking purpose.
We create a post-paid system for water consumption, and at the same time promote the health benefit of clean water.
Aside from becoming customers, we open entrepreneurship opportunity for local people through water sales agent scheme.

Scaling the solution: How would the prize money and publicity help you to achieve your objectives over the next two years?

The prize money will be useful for expansion of current initiative, while the publicity will help us in replication.

1. Natural gas conversion for public transportation. We have converted 400 public commuter vans (angkutan kota), and invented integrated software for NGV safety monitoring.
2. Flare Gas Recovery to produce electricity. We reuse 5 MMSCFD of flare gas waste to generate 12 MW electricity for the people in West Papua.
