About Project

Problem: What problem is this project trying to address?

In Bangladesh there exists over 2500 textiles with dyeing facilities among which around 5% of them have effluent treatment plants for effectively treating hazardous effluents. Most shocking is that almost half of this 5% don't utilize there ETP due to high maintenance & the other half uses chemical treatment process, the disadvantages of which are the high chemical cost, large amount of highly toxic physico-chemical sludge and hardly satisfy NEQS

Solution: What is the proposed solution? Please be specific!

The motto of our project is to form an conjoined/common Effluent Treatment Plant that will treat waste waters from multiple plants for achieving economy of scale & treat them biologically.Biological treatment will require low investment & operational costs, efficiency & stability will be higher, critical processes like phosphorus and nitrogen removal will be executed biologically. Due to its extremely high stability and operational reliability this process is particularly well suited for seasonal load fluctuations of purification capacities. In short, conjoined ETP will ensure sustainability through encouraging more industrialists to treat their effluents effectively & efficiently minimizing the use of resources.

Conjoined ETP will be established in place dense in dyeing facility. Suppose 4 medium sized textiles located in almost same location each having dyeing operation. Each of these factories don't have effluent treatment plant of their own because its not economically efficient. Reasons for non efficiency may be not producing enough supply of effluents on regular basis, high establishment & maintenance cost, lack of expertise to maintain ETP. Effluents from these plants will be brought to our conjoined treatment plant where treatment will be carried out through biological activated sludge (ASP) method. The biological treatment is carried out by MBBR in the biological tank.

Biological waste water treatment possesses high degree of efficiency with minimum running cost (5 to 6 times less) compared to other methods. Average reduction efficiency of BOD, COD, TSS and TDS is found 84%, 59.1%, 81.7% and 54.8% respectively by biological treatment. None of the methods except biological method can satisfy discharge standard as good as this method.

Spread Strategies: Moving forward, what are the main strategies for scaling impact?

Get the word out about our services to potential customers, educate them as to the benefit created & provided-this would be our strategy. Conjoined ETP's sales force will increase as business demand permits.In the first six to twelve months of operations, our sales team will focus its efforts on garments & textile industry. The team will promote the service based on potential groups of customer. We will try to convey our message & service to the market leaders of industries first. Then our target will be mid-range & after that small range factories. Gazipur & Savar will be our starting point.

Financial Sustainability Plan: What is this solution’s plan to ensure financial sustainability?

We'll be needing around USD $12,88,460 for setting up the plant which includes cost of land, infrastructure, machinery, bacteria seeds & chemical required for around 6 months commercial operation. 50 % of the total investment will be financed by bank & for the rest we will look for investors. We will go in agreement with each of our clients for at least 2-3 years. Our selling unit will be in per m^3.Using full capacity we will be reach break even

Marketplace: Who else is addressing the problem outlined here? How does the proposed project differ from these approaches?

The idea of Combined ETP is new and innovative from every perspective. We have huge number of factories in our country & the number is increasing majority of which are textile & garments & this will continue due to growing demand for our textile & garments products in world market. And all these textile & garments produces huge amount of toxic effluents which need treatment which means we will need more ETP plants. As our Combined ETP will show an economy will show a new economic way for effluent treatment soon more will be interested & try to penetrate the market perceiving potential profit.

Founding Story

This idea came to mind when was doing my internship after my 3rd final exam in a textile factory. That factory had weaving, knitting & dyeing operation. Effluents from dyeing was disposed into a pond neighboring to the factory. When I asked them explanation, they replied that high operating & chemical cost as a prime reason. They also tried to justify there behavior by referring to several other textiles located near them doing the same. Then suddenly an idea popped into my head regarding conjoined ETP from which everyone will get benefited, cost of operation will be reduced as economy of scale will be achieved, factories will be legally supported & above all water pollution will be reduced in a large scale. That was my Aha! moment.

We will try to convey our message & service to the market leaders of industries first. This will help us publicize our service later. Then our target will be mid-range & after that small range factories. Face-to-face contact and short time power point presentation will be part of our selling plan. Several groups have welcomed our idea in the textile field.

Scaling the solution: How would the prize money and publicity help you to achieve your objectives over the next two years?

Prize money which will be provided will not be enough for found the plant. But this will definitely aid for the same & publicity will help us getting investors reliability & fund.

Previously I along with 3 partners of mine tried to initiate an mobile application which will be able to work for purchase requisition generation through mobile phones & aid in increase responsiveness of stock replenishment. We are still looking for investors for this.
